My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I am learning to trust…

I struggle with confidence & self-esteem like a lot of girls do. I am among the misguided & misunderstood. I arrived at the shelter a couple months ago & I was simply terrified. The kennels are small & the confinements seem distant from the others. I know I have “neighbors”, I see the other pups walk past my den. Although I would love to extend my paw to them, many of them are not genuinely interested in being friends. They too have their own agenda & a family is their goal as is mine. These are my walls that I use to shield myself from the world, my cot that lifts me up from the cold, my blankets that comfort me at night when I’m all alone. My life has never been glorious, I have never had the elegance of the finer things in life, it has merely been an existence. Now my world has been turned upside down. The life I once knew is a thing of the past. I know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, it glows in the distance & eventually it will lead me to a second chance at this thing called happily ever after.

My name is Keneya. You see I never knew what to expect when I landed here. I had no idea how people would perceive me. Would they understand I need time to adjust, would they let me go at my pace, would they have the patience to wait? Would they give me the reassurance, guidance & love I crave to thrive? Would they see the potential I hideaway in my heart? Contrariety to what I see, the staff & volunteers at the shelter see me as a wonderful 2 year old Pitbull beauty. They say my eyes twinkle with hope, my coat shimmers in the sun & my personality is slowly blossoming into the pup they know I am. Every day I get more comfortable in my own fur. Every day I find more reasons to trust my friends at the shelter. The obstacles & hurdles that once seemed too difficult to overcome I am conquering one at a time. Routine suits me well. The more I see someone, the more at easy I become & the walls start to dismantle.

I promise you I’m no dummy I just need you to prove to me that it’s ok to trust again. With all I’ve been through in life trust is something I’m leery of but I’m getting better with it. I’m educated in my basic commands. I know the meaning of sit & will even give you my paw. I walk ok on leash but if another pup is passing by I’m really interested in them & will pull their way. So if you can divert my attention back to you walks will be easier on both of us. There is so much I want to learn but I need your help to do so. I need you to believe in me so I can believe in myself.

One of my favorite things to do is walk. I’m an inquisitive girl who likes to take the lead as long as I know you are there to cover my back. Playing with my toys is something I can do alone to entertain myself or include you as a way to bond. Although I do enjoy a tasty treat (what girl doesn’t) I prefer it to be smothered in peanut butter or dipped in yogurt. Cuddles are something that must be earned & don’t come right away. Once we get to know each other I’m sure I’ll be occupying that spot on the couch right next to you. I’d love to be your little shadow, your number one girl, the pup you dream about at night, the one that is never far from your heart. Time heals everything, even the past of my little heart. I would love to have a playmate. Maybe another pup or a kitty cat that doesn’t mind my kind. What do you say? Can we take it slow? I can’t wait to find my forever family. The ones that will make me feel safe & secure. My angels that will not only tell me there is nothing to fear…they will show me. I’m patiently waiting at the shelter for these special people to come. Won’t you make my dreams come true? Truthfully I’m hoping to be yours.

Note: As with all of our dogs, we strongly recommend obedience classes for new owner and dog to create a life-long bond with the adopted dog based on trust, respect and rewarding training experiences. We are offering dog training classes through FMAS Wagtime Dog Training. You can check out more information at www.fmaswagtime.com. We can help you train practical skills you use every day with positive reinforcement training. Our shelter dogs are strays and we observe and assess their behavior at the shelter which may be somewhat different in a home environment. In addition dogs adopted from the Manchester Animal Shelter are spayed/neutered, microchipped and have received their Rabies and distemper vaccinations as well as other necessary medical care such as flea treatment. All dogs are also heartworm tested. Some prudent care such as heartworm medication is not provided at the shelter and should be taken care of at the earliest convenience upon adoption.
