My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Wendell is a big, lovable, snuggly 2 year old male American Staffordshire Terrier mix who is just about the sweetest guy around! He adores people and will let just about anyone give him a belly rub! He has been to numerous adoption events and he blows everyone away by being the most well behaved dog at the event. After settling in, he just lays down and relaxes. He greets people nicely when they come to say hi and craves attention and love. Wendell likes to play and have fun but because he's a big boy, he probably wouldn't be an endurance athlete. He prefers to lounge around on the couch after going for a nice walk through the neighborhood. He loves stuffies and will immediately destroy them with great joy but isn't that what stuffies are made for?! People are often intimidated by a big dog but there is not a mean bone in Wendell's body; he's all about the love.

Wendell was a stray so we don't have any history on him prior to coming to the shelter. He was extremely stressed at the shelter but once out of the shelter and in a home, he blossomed. In his current foster home, he has been exposed to children ages 10 and up and has done absolutely great. At adoption events he has been exposed to younger children and seemed to do really well greeting them and getting belly rubs. We think he'd do fine in a home with children as long as the parents are bully savvy because he's a big boy who can easily knock small children over. At the shelter he played with several dogs and did very well but he does need a dog who appreciates his rough play style and his size. He gets very excited when he sees other dogs and we think he'd be fine with another dog with the right introduction. He lived with some puppies in his foster home for a while and he was over the moon for the puppies! He loved playing with them and was very gentle. Wendell has not been cat tested but does not show a high degree of interest in the cats in his foster home.

Wendell needs a dog savvy home because while he has come a long way from the shelter, he still needs guidance from his person to help him calm down when he gets excited. He is a very strong boy so someone who can handle him on leash, while he continues his training, will be critical. Wendell will occasionally hump when he is very excited and this is an issue we continue to work on with him but he does respond very well to correction. He is very smart and he wants to please so someone who can continue his training with lots of love and praise will be the right family for him. Wendell does come with some funds to support his training in his adoptive home.

Wendell is crate trained and is used to sleeping in his crate at night. His current foster mom admits to having a huge crush on him and says he is a truly awesome boy and a joy to have around. He is up-to-date on his vaccinations, is microchipped and neutered. If you are interested in adding a lot of sweetness to your family, please consider adopting this awesome Wendell!
