My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This boy has been in our care for about a year – and we have NO idea why! He is smart, sweet, and an absolute love-sponge! This is the dog that greets his people when they come home, and who devotes his sole purpose in life to loving and being loyal to his human. Officially named Popeye, we love this dog so much that we call him Pops or Popster.

Pops is a rescue favourite, loved by all the volunteers. He’s an adult dog that is past the puppy stage (no chewing or nonsense, he’s too good for that), and is a mature and charming dog.

He LOVES his people, and is looking for a home with someone looking to cuddle and relax.

Pops has cataracts in both eyes, and an eye condition called pannus, which is irritated by stress but easily maintained with eye drops. Because of this mild health issue, Pops has a reduced adoption fee of $200. His future home should be prepared for long term maintenance of his condition, but not prepared for him to leave you life anytime soon!) Other than his eyes, Pops has no other sign of old age, which is also what causes people to believe he is younger than he looks.

Speaking of age, we think he’s about 3-7 years old – why such a broad range, you ask? Pops is a former street dog from a foreign country, which not only means that we have no birth date, but it is possible that his eye condition is only a product of his previous life. Since coming into care, he is an active, healthy and happy guy! He is also the PERFECT sized dog, about knee height on your average short person – not too big, not too small – a lap-dog, but not so small that you need to worry about stepping on him.

He would love an active home, or even a home where he can relax and just spend time in a yard and in the house – YES, he is really THAT easy going! Pops loves the outdoors, and even has off-leash recall. He also has a playful and goofy personality that steals the hearts of all he meets!

Pops is looking for a home without other pets or small children – as he really does want his paw-rents all to himself! Like many hounds, Pops does have a prey drive and his future family should be aware of that. Fun fact: you can capitalize on that prey drive for training! He does love to have respectful dog playdates (he LOVES his furry friends), but he is dog selective (or “picky” as we like to call it), so we recommend he not live with another dog (so he doesn’t get annoyed seeing them every day… haha!). Because we can’t tell when he’ll reject another dog, we recommend no dog parks please.

Cute things about Pops:

Like all dogs, he has a bark, but unlike most dogs, he “talks”! He bumbles and rumbles about how much he loves you! Ever seen a video of a husky talking? They must be his distant cousins!
ops sits patiently at (or on) your feet for love and attention. Watching a movie? You have a foot warmer! Is your lap cold? Invite this guy up beside you; who needs a blanket when you have Pops!
Too busy for pets and cuddles? Pops rubs his body up against your leg (yes, like a cat). He knows what he likes and he will use your leg to pet himself!
