My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Rescue in progress! Waldo will be at Shelter Hope in Rancho Cordova tomorrow, Sept. 9th or Sat.

Here's what we know about him and why he was on doggy death row :(

Hello everyone, I am contacting you regarding a corgi mix at the shelter: This boy needs rescue because he is fearful here inside/at the county animal shelter!

Mr. Waldo iis an approximately 3 year old male corgi mix weighing 21 lbs. He was picked up as a stray in West Sacramento, and his family never came for him or to reclaim him here at the shelter, so he's now homeless and/or was abandoned!

This little guy is having a really rough time at the shelter. The first time I went to meet him, he ran to the back of his kennel and bared his teeth at me, barking and growling. I put a crate in his kennel so he would have a place to hide, and that's how we've been getting him in and out of the kennel here at the shelter. He barks and growls at us when we close the kennel door, but over the last 3 days has been making steady progress outside of the kennel environment.

The first day we spent time together, he stayed in his carrier in our office most of the time, only coming out a couple of times to sniff. We brought a small dog in to visit, and he did perk up more then, coming out of the carrier to sniff and watch the other dog.

During our second date, we took him out to the evaluation yard in his carrier, and brought in two small playful dogs. He was interested in them and was also comfortable enough to walk around the yard and explore, although he didn't approach us. He did tell off on of the other dogs when he tried to mount him, but otherwise seemed much happier with their company!

During our third visit, we brought him out to the evaluation yard with a playful large dog. He didn't want to play with the other dog but again seemed much braver having another dog there with him! For the first time, he approached and sniffed us! It was hot outside, so after a while we brought him in his carrier into our office. This time he came out of the carrier right away to eat treats, and took treats from my hand! He is now snoozing quietly in our office.

During his behavior evaluation, he growled and bared his teeth at the testers when they approached his kennel, and rescue was requested due to fear aggression.

Mr. Waldo is wearing a flea collar and was clearly someone's dog, but he needs to be out of the shelter environment and in a patient and experienced adoptive home where he can learn to trust again. He has made significant progress in just a few days with us, but he still isn't comfortable with us reaching for him or leashing him and will put on a display when scared.

Can anyone be Mr. Waldo's guardian angel and give him the chance he needs? Please call or text (916) 303-0334 if you are interested in meeting Waldo!
