Boomer is a totally perfect 60+ pound boy who looks like an American Bulldog, or that’s what I thought until a dog trainer told me is actually an even more unusual breed: a Dogo Argentino.
Dogo Argentinos are VERY rare and are pretty special dogs.
Boomer is a shelter rescue, where he was a favorite among the staff. He is sweet and gentle, and just a big, lumbering, goofy boy.
He has all the characterizes of an American Bulldog (which is pretty much the same as a Dogo Argentino, but the Dogo Argentino is bred to be pure white, like Boomer).
Boomer is a very strong boy –he is all muscle and doesn’t even know his own strength.
He needs a good, strong (but gentle) dominant handler –he is excellent and amazingly gentle with people and with most dogs, but he picks and chooses his doggie friends.

Boomer is simply marvelous with people -- gentle and loving, and very well-behaved. He is also good with children – even though he is bigger than a lot of the children who come from around the neighborhood to play with him, he just seems to know to be good with kids. He doesn’t jump or play rough with them at all.
I had a dog trainer visit to evaluate Boomer’s personality and temperament. The trainer said Boomer was super good with people and needs to get to know other large dogs before bonding with them. He really seems to ignore them more than anything else.
Boomer sleeps in the house on his own doggie bed with 2 or 3 other medium-to-big dogs, and is docile and sweet.
He is a wonderful love puppy, with or without a leash. He is so sweet that you even take a nice chewy bone or toy out of his mouth, and he will cooperate like a lamb!
Boomer is not a barker or a digger or a jumper – he is content to sleep beside you on the floor or hang out side on the deck during the day.
A Dogo Argentino is not an appropriate choice for a first-time dog owner. He is big, powerful, intelligent, energetic, and headstrong. A Dogo needs a leader who can guide him with firmness and consistency without using force or cruelty. If you want the courageous, yet kind, dog, that is the Dogo at his best. But you must commit to training and exercising him throughout his life.
Boomer pretty much ignores my smaller fosters, but will bark at my rescued farm animals and is definitely not a good dog to be around kitties.
Like all dogs, and maybe particularly big strong, rare dogs like Boomer (with distinctive personalities), need training, and Boomer would definitely be a fabulous candidate for some serious training – well trained, Boomer would be a rather unique and fabulous best buddy.
The Dogo Argentino is said to be hypoallergenic, but since I am not allergic to dogs, I cannot tell if Boomer is or is not.
If you want a fabulous, rare, strong, funny fellow as a buddy, Boomer might be a good choice for you.
Since he is SO rare, he should go to someone who is familiar with his breed and their idiosyncrasies.
You might want to consider taking him home for a sleepover to see how you and the rest of your family adapt to one another.
