My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Tommy was originally rescued when he was 3 weeks old from Animal Rescue Recon. he was adopted when he was 3 months old. Tommy AKA Frizz now needs a new home.

Tommy is 2 years old. Despite being a black-coated lab/german shepherd mix, he has been dubbed Scooby-Doo by neighbors and friends. The doggiest of dogs, he is very loving and playful but hilariously clumsy. He never has quite gotten the hang of his lanky legs. He's lived and visited with several dogs of all sizes and temperaments and is happy to play with any who will let him close enough for a sniff, wisely leaving alone those who will not. He's gently coexisted with babies and kids, and is generally excited to meet any new friends. A well-traveled dog, he has been on several 10-15 hour road trips without incident. He is always happy to sleep and relax in the car until a new adventure develops. Having lived on a main diet of dry dog food, he thoroughly enjoys the occasional cheese or, during summer, watermelon. He also does well when hosting parties at home, so long as we prepare for his initial excitement at having visitors. At the dog park, he spends his time doing his best to be part of the pack. His instincts lie closer to that of a shepherd. He vastly prefers to give chase rather than fetch. He loves all things plush and soft, but is not delicate enough to keep them for long. Sturdier bedding, toys, and XL bones suit his size much better.

In his new home, Tommy will need a constant and consistent hand. He is well trained, intelligent, and ready to learn, but will certainly explore boundaries in new situations. He loves and craves as much exercise and engagement as can be offered. You will not often find him lazing about. He is crate trained and house trained. He is comfortable sleeping overnight in his crate. We have also trained him to press a floor bell to let us know when he is ready for a bathroom break outside. As for commands he knows sit, stay, down, spin, jump, shake, and will wait to eat or enter the house on command. When out for walks, he usually goes at a quite leisurely pace while observing and sniffing his surroundings. If you are a runner, he is happy to follow suit.

When he was first adopted, he experienced moderate separation anxiety as he was settling in. We've done our best to introduce him to new things and situations but a new big change may reignite that anxiety. His half german-shepherd coat has made the frequent shedding seasons very hard on us. Our home is fully carpeted and we have a mobile baby and frequent young visitors. Faced with the choice of trying to contain either or both of them we've decided that he needs a better living situation as he has always lived indoors and we no longer have time to fully control the spread of the hair with almost daily vacuuming. He is generally unhappy living outside separate from the family and we've made the difficult decision of rehoming him to a family that can better manage this and still provide him with all the love and attention he needs.

Animal Rescue Recon makes sure that each dog is current on its vaccinations, has been or will be spayed or neutered, and is microchipped to help keep pets out of the shelters and get them back home where they belong.
