My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted!

Kai completed his Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) treatment while in foster care. Kai requires calcium re-checks every six months.

Update April 2017: Kai's wellness panel revealed elevated calcium so additional veterinary testing must be performed prior to finalizing his permanent placement. Elevated calcium has many possible causes and one of them is Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Tests and an ultrasound confirmed a PHPT diagnosis so Kai will undergo PHPT surgery on May 2. Kai's surgery at the specialty hospital was successful and he will be hospitalized for a few days. Kai will require monitoring and calcium re-checks when he is released to his foster home for post-surgery care.

Since the Keeshond is 50 times more likely to be diagnosed with PHPT than other breeds, please read about PHPT in this link: http://www.keeshondrescue.org/Health.html

Southern California Keeshond Rescue, Inc. (SCKR) welcomed Kai, birthdate- January 2010, into our rescue program when his family went through lifestyle changes and could not take care of Kai anymore. Kai's former family expressed concern about resource guarding behavior over food that occurred with their smaller male dog. Kai was examined by our veterinarian, vaccinated, and tested for heart worms. A wellness panel was performed and he underwent neuter surgery and dental cleaning. Prior to moving to foster care, he enjoyed quality time at Grateful Dogs Clubhouse for socialization activities with a variety of dogs.

SCKR's wonderful foster families welcome our dogs into their homes and families while they await their forever homes. While Kai is being evaluated in his foster home, he is also receiving some basic training skills in foster care to prepare him for permanent placement. In his former home, Kai seldom left his home environment so he was not leash trained and he became anxious during car rides upon arrival in our rescue program. Kai loves walking on leash now and he walks about 2 miles each day with his foster family. Kai feels a bit anxious about riding in the car, but he is getting better all the time. He likes to go along with his foster family.

In his foster home, Kai is a happy, smiling, good-natured little guy who just wants to be with his family. He knows the following commands: sit, stay, no, come, quiet, shake, high 5, down, and off. His favorite things include attention of any kind and walks--his least favorite things include being left out of activities and getting baths. Kai was left alone all day in his original home--he really likes people and he enjoys his foster home with someone home most of the time. Kai is easy going, very well behaved and he tries very hard to fit in and do what will make his family happy. His foster family has not experienced resource guarding behavior with the other male Keeshond resident dogs in the home. Kai's foster family has observed that Kai has good greeting manners with other dogs and seems pretty good at reading signals from them. When Kai encounters children, he is rather indifferent to them unless they give him attention, then he likes them. Although Kai has not lived with cats, he has met a variety of animals in foster care. The neighbors have barn cats that are in his foster home's yard periodically. The barn cats are dog savvy and Kai has not chased them when he is alone with them. When playing with the other dogs in his foster home, Kai will join the other dogs in chasing cats--he joins the others in a fun chase but does not harm the cats. While in his foster home, Kai has been introduced to other animals in the neighborhood, including dogs, cats, horses and chickens. He also met some raccoons who are in foster care with the local wildlife rescue. :-)

Please visit our website at www.foreverkees.org for details on our adoption process.

Please note: We follow up on our adoptions, provide our adopters with lifetime support, and take our dogs back at any time if the people are unable to care for them. This is our commitment to our dogs and our adopters. To make this level of support possible, we must place our dogs within driving distance for our volunteers in Southern California.
