My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hedgesville Hounds is helping this family rehome their dog:

Hello! My name is Murphy. I am an 8-year-old St. Bernard and Swiss Mountain Dog mix. I weigh about 90 pounds. Because I'm a big boy, I'm not real high energy. Sometimes I will have short bursts of energy, but they don't last long. But take me for a long walk or let me play in an open field, and I'll be happy to spend as much time doing that as I can.

My favorite activity is going for walks where I can explore all the interesting smells. I also love playing in the water, but I don't always remember that I can swim. So I'll go in as far as I can without having to swim. Sometimes I'll dunk my head under the water and try rolling around in it. And although I love to chase after a stick or ball that is thrown, I’m not too interested in giving it back. But I think I could learn how to politely return my treasures if someone would work with me in a positive way.

I've been with my current family for about 4 years. I had some "issues" when I first joined their family. Nobody knew my background, so they didn't know why. But my family worked with me to help me feel more safe and secure in my new world. I am an extremely loyal companion and love to be with my adult humans. Kids, especially young ones, make me a little nervous, so my new home will need to be one without children.

I've mastered a few cues: sit, stay, down, shake/paw, wait (for food...this is a really important one!), and roll over. I’m not very fond of cars and would prefer to never have to go into one.

I love spending time outdoors, but I don't chase other animals. Rabbit, deer, other dogs? Just tell me "No," and I won't pursue them. If there are any farmers out there looking for a loyal and loving companion to accompany you as you do your chores....I'm your guy!!

I do tug a little on the leash, mainly because I haven't been taught how to walk politely on a leash. But I'm very smart, and I know I could learn very quickly if someone would teach me in a positive way.

My idea of the perfect life would be to just hang around with my human(s) and take long walks. I’m not much of a cuddler, but I do love attention. I have an earnest desire to please, and I listen well. Because I love being with my people, I would do best in a home where I am the only pet and where someone is around much of the time.

I like learning how to be a responsible family member, and I know I’ll do very well with a new guardian who will use positive training methods to help me continue to learn. I'm looking forward to meeting you soon!

If you'd like to meet me, please contact my current human, Jim, at 301-706-4528 or 301-907-7600.
