My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Tyra is a 6 year old pittie who came to us from Yolo County Animal Services after being surrendered by her family. Tyra's life was not easy as she lived in a home that did not properly care for her and she was only an outdoor dog. She experienced quite a bit of trauma in her home but despite that, she is as sweet and loving as any dog comes! She LOVES people and she greets everyone she meets with butt wiggles and seeks affection. She will give endless kisses :) She is crate trained, house trained, UTD on vaccinations, microchipped and spayed.

Child appropriate? So far Tyra has proven to be fine with everyone she meets. We feel she would be ok with children of any age provided they have been taught dog manners and are not allowed to climb all over her or pull her tail, ears, etc...

Other dog appropriate? Not sure. Tyra lived with several dogs in her prior home and her owners said she did well in the home with male dogs and had a few scuffles with a female dog but otherwise was fine. Upon first dog testing her at the shelter she did well with big and small dogs and showed little interest in them. She was briefly placed in a foster home and did fine with the male dog for the first hour then when he snarked at her she pinned him to the ground but was easily redirected from this. We feel she would do fine with another dog with a proper introduction and given time to adjust in the home with crating and rotating. This is typical for many dogs, they just need a bit of time to warm up and get used to another dog and then they are fine.

Cat appropriate? No

How is she with strangers? Tyra is great with strangers and pretty much everyone. She loves people and is very happy to see them and immediately warms up. She craves attention and she bonds very fast to new people.

What is her play style? Tyra is an older gal so she prefers low key activities and her play style consists of chewing on her bones and taking a sniff around the yard. She is pretty mellow. She doesn't really play tug or anything like that but she loves chewing on her toys and destroying stuffies!

Does she like toys? Yes, Tyra loves toys! She enjoys tougher chew toys and stuffies. She hasn't really met a toy she doesn't like!

Does she like water? Unknown at this time.

Does she like car rides? Tyra does fine riding in the car and does not show any distress. She rides nicely and calmly both in and out of a crate.

Exercise level needed? Tyra doesn't need a ton of exercise because she is an older dog. She enjoys going for walks and her foster mom takes her for 3 mile walks regularly and she does fine. She would be ok in a home that had a nice yard where she could sunbathe and where she got a daily walk but is easy to manage in terms of exercise.

Behavior issues? None known at this time. We are continuing to test her with other dogs so we can better gauge any reactivity she might have that was noticed in that one foster home but otherwise she has no behavior issues.

Medical issues? None known.

Skills? Tyra is very smart and learns quickly. She wasn't taught much in her previous home but she has learned "sit" and "off" and is learning every day. She walks wonderfully on leash and is a breeze!

Special/endearing things? Tyra is so loving and sweet and everyone who meets her falls in love. She craves affection and she would make an excellent couch buddy. She bonds very quickly with new people and is such a happy dog.

Ideal home? Tyra's ideal home will be one where she is an indoor dog allowed to be a member of the family. She spend her whole life outside and that is no place for any dog, especially a pittie because they are so person oriented. We want Tyra's home to adore her and make up for all the lost time she didn't get love and affection. A home who knows the value of an older dog is a must because they will appreciate her mellow, laid back personality and having companionship. A quieter home might be nice for her because she is older and one that can give her daily exercise and interaction.
