About Our Shelter...

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was the first humane society to be established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world. Our organization was founded by Henry Bergh in 1866 on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans, and must be protected under the law. Headquartered in New York City, the ASPCA maintains a strong local presence, and with programs that extend our anti-cruelty mission across the country, we are recognized as a national animal welfare organization. We are a privately funded 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, and proud to boast more than 1 million supporters across the country.

Our Adoption Process...

When you are ready to visit the ASPCA Adoption Center at 424 East 92nd Street, please note the following to facilitate the adoption process:

- You must be 21 years of age or older to adopt.
- Adopters are required to provide a government issued photo ID (Driver's License, State Identification Card, Passport, etc.) and separate proof of current address (such as a lease or telephone, utility or cable bill). Government issued photo ID is not accepted as proof of address.
- If you are interested in adopting a dog, please make sure to bring all of the members of your household including any resident dogs. In some cases, this may be a requirement to adopt. If you live alone and have a resident dog, please make sure to bring a trusted friend or family member to wait with your resident dog while you go on a tour, as owned pets are not permitted on tours.
- If you have a resident cat, please leave them at home as we cannot perform any adoptions with resident cats present.
- You may be asked to provide one personal reference, reachable by phone.
- Be sure to check your building's policy relevant to pet ownership to avoid any landlord concerns.
- If you have any questions, please call the Adoption Desk at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120.
