My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Elmo is a 2 year old, 77 lb., male American bully mix possibly. He came to us from a local shelter where he was found as a stray. We have no history of his life prior. He is a shy boy who needs time to warm up as his soul is a bit too fragile for this world. He adores people and the company of other dogs and is an all around sweetheart. He is crate trained, house trained, neutered, UTD on vaccinations, microchipped and ready for his forever home.

Child appropriate? Elmo has not been around children but because he is a bit of a scaredy cat, we think he’d do best in a home with children over the age of 12 so he doesn’t get frightened by fast movements, high pitched sounds, etc….

Other dog appropriate? Elmo loves the company of other dogs as they give him confidence and help him be brave. He seems to do best with females but has done fine with small and big dogs. He currently lives in foster care with a female medium sized dogs and a small, male Chi and gets along great with them.

Cat appropriate? Yes! Elmo lives with a cat in his foster home and does fine but he does like to chase the cat if it runs as he thinks they are playing.

How is he/she with strangers? Elmo is shy with new people so he needs some time to warm up. He is open to meeting new people but doesn't show his true sweet soft personality until he gets to trust you.

What is his/her play style? He is a gentle giant! He will play with his doggie friends but it doesn’t last long because he gets tired. He’s a short stout boy so he doesn’t have a lot of stamina. For playing he mostly just chews his toys and likes to take toys from the other dogs. When his foster caregivers get home from work he gets so excited and runs around the couch three times saying “hi” to everyone and then after that he's pretty much back to taking a nap.

Does he/she like toys? Yes! He enjoys gnawing on rope toys and heavy rubber toys but he ends up chewing most of them up. He will need heavier duty toys to help them last but he really has fun destroying them.

Does he/she like water? Elmo seems to like the lake but will not go in a kiddie pool or go near the hose.

Does he/she like car rides? Elmo rides fine in the car but he doesn’t appear overjoyed for car rides so he could probably take them or leave them.

Exercise level needed? Elmo would prefer relaxing at home then going on a long walk! As mentioned, he has lower energy being an American Bully mix and so he tires out fast. He would do fine with a back yard to do zoomies in and that is about it.

Behavior issues? Elmo is a shy guy but once he trusts you he will be your 77 pound lapdog. He can be nervous when meeting new people so needs treats to help him warm up. He is comfortable home alone but would much rather have someone in a home with him. He has demonstrated some separation anxiety while left alone for long periods of time but he does better with a doggie friend.

Medical issues? None known.

Skills? Elmo knows “sit” and “down” and is trying to learn “shake”!

Special/endearing things? Elmo is incredibly sweet and loving and makes a great snuggle buddy on the couch. He LOVES to be with his people and because he is lower energy, he is totally fine just hanging out and being a house dog. Once he trusts you he is so very loving.
Elmo is not a tough guy, despite being judged by the way he looks; rather he is a teddy bear. He is scared of a fly! He has really blossomed in his foster home and has come leaps and bounds in his confidence. He gets to excited to see his caregivers and does zoomies all over until he tires himself up then he just parks it until it’s time to cuddle. He would love to be a bed buddy to a family who wants him to sleep with them. He loves his doggie companions and really bonds with them.

Ideal home: Elmo’s ideal home would be where someone is familiar with fearful or shy dogs so that they can help him continue to come out of his shell. He would do best in a quieter home where there aren’t tons of guests all the time. Any home with a big couch would be perfect! It would be great for him to find a family where someone is home often or part of the day. He needs someone willing to work on building a trusting relationship, set boundaries, will allow time for adjustments, have patience and willing to further his training and socialization skills. He needs a home with another friendly dog who can keep him company and help him feel confident.
