My story

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Bobby's mom is a Great Pyrenees/Maremma who has spent her life as a working livestock guardian dog, first in Kansas and later in Texas. Bobby was raised with goats, and had some exposure to chickens, but always seemed more interested in playing with the other dogs than in protecting the livestock. We moved him into the house for some basic training, such as how to walk on a leash, as well as crate-training and house/potty-training. He also got a refresher course in good manners around chickens. He did really well with all of these changes, but didn't really seem HAPPY in the house, so we moved him into one of our paddocks. Bobby seems happier living outside, but will come in the house if that's what you ask. He has good guardian instincts as far as walking the perimeter and barking when he hears coyotes. We think the best home for Bobby might be as a family guardian on a small homestead, where he can live outside, but be allowed to come inside during thunderstorms, which frighten him. He is very shy on meeting new people, so he needs an adopter with the patience to earn his trust. He also needs secure fencing that is at least 5' tall. He hasn't challenged the fencing at Windsong Ranch, but because of his skittishness with strangers, we don't feel safe putting him in a new home with fencing shorter than 5'. Once a fearful dog goes over the fence, it can be almost impossible to get them home again.

If Bobby looks like just the companion you need in your life, please submit your application at www.bluebonnetrescue.org.

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process includes an application that helps us get to know you better so we can help you make the best match. If you have pets already, we will talk with your vet's office to be sure that you are being a good guardian for these animals. The next step is a home visit, during which we will pay special attention to your fencing and the shelter you will offer to one of our dogs. Finally, once everything is approved, we will introduce you to one or more dogs. If you fall in love and the feeling is mutual, we will complete a contract. Our adoption fees vary according to the age and type of dog. We try to list the fee for each dog on his or her profile on our Adopt-a-Pet page, but in general, this is our fee structure: $100 for Senior Dogs $200 for "Regular" Dogs who are wonderful house pets $300 for Farm-friendly Dogs who won't chase the chickens $300 for Livestock-safe Adult Dogs who will guard goats, sheep, etc. $300 for Puppies and Young Adults 2 years old and younger We are an all-volunteer organization, and every one of our volunteers has a "real job" that takes up 8 or more hours a day. So please be patient when you contact us -- we'll respond to you as quickly as we can, but please don't be annoyed if it takes us 24 hours.

Go meet their pets

We are based at Windsong Ranch in Whitewright, TX. This is a private, working ranch, so visits are by appointment only. We host an annual "Ranch & Rescue Day" in the fall, with a petting zoo, hay ride, and other fun activities. We are working on plans for a monthly adoption event at a local retail store, and will update this when the schedule is confirmed.

More about this rescue

Bluebonnet Animal Rescue Network (BARN) was founded in 2013 to help animals in North Texas, and especially in the Texoma area. We are a non-profit corporation, founded by people who had spent years rescuing an assortment of animals -- from a vulture with a broken wing to feral cats to dogs who were dumped in our rural area. We fostered for another organization for a few years before forming BARN. We are not breed-specific in our rescue efforts, but we have a fair amount of experience with Great Pyrenees and a few other livestock guardian breeds. We are always looking for more volunteers, including foster homes. And of course, as a non-profit organization, we always appreciate donations of time, services, dollars, and supplies. We usually have a LOT of big dogs in foster, and grooming appointments are expensive, so we are especially glad to have volunteers help us with this task. We would also be glad to have your help spreading the word about Bluebonnet Animal Rescue -- through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other social media you use. Give us a call and let us know how you would like to help!
