A SWEETHEART WITH HEARTWORM

A good Samaritan found a young male boxer who was roaming the neighborhood and brought him to her veterinarian. No one claimed him and we were asked if we could take him into our rescue program. We have named him Iggy.

When Iggy was found he was quite thin and had some lacerations and abrasions in various stages of healing. He weighed in at 35 lbs and, unfortunately, tested positive for heartworm. The doctors estimate his age to be approximately 2 years.

We had Iggy transferred to another animal hospital where he was treated for his heartworms. Radiographs were taken of his heart and they showed enlargement on the right side consistent with heartworm disease. Although heartworms can be fatal, and treatment for the disease involves risk, the condition is usually curable. Treatment requires careful medical care and complete rest.

Iggy will need to be kept quiet with no excitement for the next 6 weeks, and he will need another heartworm treatment injection at that time. Sometimes a few heartworms survive treatment, therefore he will need to be tested again in six months. If any heartworms are still alive, heartworm treatment must be repeated.

Iggy is such a sweet boy and he is a real cuddler. He is currently in his new foster home and “chilling out“. He is not a fan of the crate so crate confinement has been kept to a minimum. He is very good in the house and has only had one accident when he first arrived. He spent his first day with his foster family laying around and napping. We hope to receive an update from his foster mom in the next few days.

Iggy’s update from his foster mom:

“Iggy is doing great in his foster home; although he could use some work on his manners. He does not ask if he can lay down with you he just flops on top of you. Iggy is a precious boy that needs to gain some much needed weight. We are currently feeding him three times a day to put some weight on his bones. His favorite room is quickly becoming the kitchen.

Iggy did well in the car on his long trip from MD down to PA. He got to catch up on his sleep, next to my daughter, for about an hour and then did some sightseeing, peering through the window, the remainder of the ride. Iggy has a winning personality. He is so lovable that everyone he meets gets a kiss.

We are working on crate training, which he is not a fan. We are trying to keep him calm until he gets over his heartworm treatment. Iggy has had only one accident, the first day, and I‘m sure that was related to all the stress of his new surroundings.

Iggy has a hard time using his voice since he got his new toy; we can't get it out of his mouth! Iggy is very affectionate and seems to have become very attached to us, almost instantly, and gets upset whenever any of us leave the house. I’m sure once he realizes he is safe, and someone is coming back, he will settle in.

OH…. AND FINALLY, HE IS DEFINITELY A WIGGLER!!!!!”
