My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I’m so happy to meet you! My name is Mason and I am a happy, energetic 6 year old, 68 lb. neutered, goofy and loving male Redbone Coonhound mix. I am content to spend most of my days snoozing on my cot or lounging out in the sun, but I also love nightly back rubs and attention from my humans.

Unfortunately, when I was just a puppy, I had to be rescued from an abusive situation that arose when my first human discovered that even though I look like a hunting dog, I’m not actually very good at sniffing out prey, so I can sometimes be wary around some (but not all) men. But give me a treat and I promise to warm up to you and trust you completely. Even though I can’t smell them, I can see them and I LOVE chasing squirrels and chipmunks in the back yard. I would benefit most from a fenced in backyard since I will not hesitate to charge through an invisible fence. I also love taking walks through the neighborhood and in the woods as long as I’m on a leash. I’m very friendly and want to say hi to everyone we meet. Sometimes I catch a glimpse of something that looks fun to chase when out on a walk, but I am easily redirected and refocused on my walk.

I am extremely food motivated, am a quick learner and am very responsive to verbal commands, particularly if there is a treat involved! I am completely house and crate trained, although for space reasons I currently use a cot instead of a crate in my foster home. I am also completely socialized and love being around other dogs, both big and small. I have lived with other dogs and have spent time playing with my friends at doggy day care. I love to play and even make sure I play appropriately for size, getting down near the ground when playing with smaller dogs. I would do well in a home either with or without other dogs, but definitely no cats, hamsters, rabbits, etc. as they all look like something fun for me to chase.

I will gladly get into your car with a simple “up” command. I currently stay pretty close to home since I have a fenced in yard and live near walking trails, so treatment options, if any, for my nerves in the car have not been discussed at length with my veterinarian.

I am neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, negative for Heartworm and Lyme disease and microchipped. I am ready and waiting for you to adopt me! Please submit an application so we can meet. I would love the opportunity to let you scratch my back.

I would prefer an active, adult-only home willing to enjoy long walks and hikes with me. I am not afraid of children and have lived with children in the past, but they can make me uncomfortable and I would just rather not share my home with them.

Mason is being fostered in Holden, MA.

The adoption fee is $300.

Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most of the dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label.

We expect that all adopted dogs will enroll in a formal dog training class with their new owners. Obedience and training classes are an excellent way to learn more about your newly adopted dog, gain handling and training experience, and improve your relationship with your pet.
