My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Chardonnay is a 3 year old spayed female Dachshund mix who weighs 11.8 pounds. She is a sensitive and shy dog with strangers and takes some time to warm up. With people she knows she is bubbly, calm, smart, sweet and loving. She is a wonderful lap dog and companion for a quiet household. She enjoys going on walks and walks beautifully on a leash.

She is shy with strangers at first, but does warm up after some time. With some people, usually men, she takes a few days to befriend them. She prefers to just be ignored to begin with and if you try too hard to make friends with her she usually takes even longer to make friends. She does love her cookies though, and they usually help her to come out of her shell. She will alert bark when someone is at the door, but can be hushed easily. She is fearful of loud noises, and will need someone who will distract her from the fearful behavior without enabling it. Alot of times people want to pet a dog and console them when they are afraid but that usually continues and increase the fearful behavior. Distractions work well with her, getting her occupied with a good chew bone or treat toy. We can show you the best technique for this. Food is your friend!

In her previous home she lived with kids and when she first came to us she lived in a foster home that had children and she enjoyed being with them. In the foster home she is in now she does not live with children and she has become very shy around them again. We will be establishing a rotation program for her so that she gets a wide variety of living arrangements so that she remains comfortable with all sorts of people. We have done this with some of our shy dogs and it really helps them to come out of their shell when they switch foster homes. Ideally we want Chardonnay to bond with her own special family, but until that time we will continue to have her switch fosters to keep her socialized.

She is housebroken with a doggie door. When first being placed into her forever home, she will need guidance and supervision until she learns the house rules, just like a baby puppy would. She is very comfortable in her crate while people are home. She is crate trained for sleeping at night, and can stay in her crate for up to 8 hours. Chardonnay puts herself to bed at night by walking into her crate, and she waits politely for a treat as a reward for being a good girl.
Her foster owner gives her a Kong treat toy to keep her occupied when they are gone. When she is excited she will jump, HIGH. She is learning “down”. She will sit, sit-up and come.

Chardonnay has the cutest way of sitting at times, she will lay back on her back hocks keeping her body off the floor. This position concerned her foster home at first, because it almost looks like she is about to pee, but now they realize that’s just part of her cute personality. It is sort of like a "half sit".

She has not had much interest in toys and mostly just wants to be with people. However her foster home says that when they get home from work they find toys scattered about. So it may be that she hasn't learned to play with toys or she is too intimidated to do it when people are around. She is good around dogs of all sizes as long as they are respectful of her space, once she warms up she will be their best friend and loves to play with dogs of her own size.
She is currently living with an adult cat and adult dog. We think that living with another outgoing and social dog would probably be good for her and help her relax.

Chardonnay is not a fan of car rides, but enjoys getting to the destinations. In her defense she does not go on rides often so we have not been working on it with her. She is loyal, and will hang out with you following you from room to room. Chardonnay is fed kibble twice daily.

This is a fantastic little sensitive dog that is longing for a family that will love her and help her through her fears. She has come a long way since being in foster care, and her wonderful personality is a joy to be around. She is looking for someone that can be her confidant and help her to continue on her path of increasing her self confidence and trust in people.

Chardonnay's adoption fee is $200 plus a microchip registration fee of $10.99. She is spayed, chipped, vaccinated and heartworm negative.
