ADOPTED - NOW DECEASED - COURTESY LISTING; Huckleberry needs a new home - here is his story: I absolutely hate to be writing this, but unfortunately I'm looking to rehome my boy Huckleberry (Huck for short). I adopted him from a kill buyer and he came off a ranch in Kansas. We have come so far with him trusting people and he now calls to me and runs to greet me at the gate every time I go see him. That may not sound like much, but Huck has a bad knee so some days it's even hard for him to walk. (I've considered putting him down so he's not in pain but then the next day he lopes up to come see me). He does seem to be getting better and today he barely walked with a limp, but some days are better than others.
I'm looking for a new home because I have been offered a horse training internship that will put me without an income for a whole year so I can't pay to have him be boarded back home. With saying that, I am absolutely in no rush and he will need to be going to an amazing home or I will not let him leave. I won't be leaving until January but I would like him to be in his new home before winter so that he can get comfortable and used to the area.
He needs a home that understands he is only there to be loved, he can never be ridden. With his knee injury it makes it impossible. He also has a tail injury (assuming from the same accident that hurt his knee before he was rescued) so he has no use of it. He needs to be sprayed with fly spray because he can't use his tail to swish them away. He also needs to be fed in the morning and at night because he doesn't graze very well. He does graze but it's not enough to keep weight on. He also gets a joint supplement but it's just the simple one from farm and fleet so it's not expensive.
I am located west of Bloomington, Illinois but am willing to meet or drive the whole way depending on location.
His ground manners are great and he's good with all ages, kids to adults. He would be good as a pasture pet, someone's friend, or even to teach kids some responsibility and what it takes to own a horse. The vet thinks he is about 15 years old, maybe closer to 18.
