Meet Rusty!
Rusty (or Little Russ as he is known is his foster home) came to us by way of the big adoption event, The Race for the Rescues at The Rose Bowl in mid-October. Rusty was at the Pasadena Humane Society and one of the dogs being shown at the event. No one adopted Rusty that day so The Rescue Train took him. He is with a very dog-savvy foster home.
Rusty currently lives with 3 other dogs and 3 cats. Rusty REALLY needs to go to a home with another playful dog. When Rusty first came to his foster home, he was so shy and so scared. His foster mom and dad could not even put a leash on him to go for a walk. He would cower and/or run away. What has helped Rusty with his shyness is structure, love, confidence-building exercises and THE OTHER DOGS in his foster home. They have shown Rusty that walks are fun, feeding time is awesome and that the human beings in his foster home will not hurt him.
We waited a full month to post Rusty as "available" for adoption as we wanted him to gain confidence in his foster home. He has flourished! Rusty now loves to sit next to everyone on the sofa, he loves to go on walks, he LOVES treats and he loves, loves, loves to engage the other dogs in his foster home in play time. (He also tries to engage the cats in his foster home in play time too. That does not go over well, so his foster mom and dad are working with Rusty to leave the cats alone. They are not interested in playing.)
Rusty is 15 pounds, in great health and totally housebroken. He also knows his name. Rusty was called "Rusty" at The Pasadena Humane Society. Since he was so nervous and shy when his foster family first brought him into their home, they kept the name Rusty. It made it easier for his transition. While you don't have to keep his name as Russ/Rusty, we would recommend doing so. It seemed by using his name with lots of praise and love, he warmed up much faster...and it helped his confidence.
Rusty would be great in a home with another playful dog or two. He travels well in a car and loves to be part of the family activities. He is good around kids, but since he is so shy, we would recommend that your kids be OVER THE AGE OF 8 so they understand the concept of working with a shy/timid dog.
Everyone who meets Rusty can't help but fall in love with him. His shyness makes him so endearing. His foster home is smitten.
If you think Rusty is the dog for your family and would like to meet him, please go to www.TheRescueTrain.Org and fill out a DOG application. We are more than happy to answer any questions about Rusty in a phone call after we receive your application, prior to setting up a meeting. Rusty is a sweetheart of a dog. We want his forever home to continue working with him and his shyness...and love him as much as we do.
