Jupiter’s owner had been taking him to a doggie day-care for about four years, and he enjoyed the interactions with the other dogs. The owner became worried about his safety at home, though, because she had a neighbor who was threatening to poison Jupiter…she didn’t like his barking. The ACO was involved and recommended rehoming him, and the daycare owner offered to keep Jupiter with her until he could be taken in by a rescue group.
When he first came into GSRNE, we found him to be quiet and cautious, with little interest in playing with toys. He did get along with the other dogs in his foster home and even was calm around the two cats. As he’s become more comfortable, we’re seeing a lot more personality and activity level and learning that Jupiter can be very affectionate; he walks up and leans in for some petting.
It takes a little while for Jupiter to relax around visitors, but he will start looking for attention once they are settled in the room and he knows everything is OK. He does have a big bark and will let his foster family know when people are walking past the house or knocking on the door. Outside in the fenced yard, he will bark with excitement while running around with the two other dogs in his foster family. Now that he’s gotten to know the cats better, he will chase them in the house if they run across the floor. Once he gets close to them, though, he has shown no aggression.
Jupiter does need a calm, confident leader. He will push to see what he can get away with, but he will move away if you raise your voice. He still goes to his favorite daycare once a week and has fun with the canine buddies he has made over the years.
