My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

IDGSR WELCOMES WESLEY INTO THE SAFETY OF THE RESCUE!!!!

FOR THE APPLICATION PLEASE CLICK ON THE ADOPTION APPLICATION LINK AT THE TOP RIGHT OF THE PAGE.

Wesley is a German Shepherd mix who is approx. 1 & 1/2 yr. old. He was brought to a kill shelter and no one came looking for him. Wesley is in a loving foster home and here is what his foster mom says about Wesley:

-General personality: Wesley is a sweet and very gentle natured dog. He is very smart and figures things out quickly. He is submissive to everyone, people and dogs. He is a skittish dog that genuinely wants to be part of the pack and he is slowly learning to trust.

-Hardest issue: It is clear that his movie idol is “Two Socks” from Dances With Wolves. He wants to connect and be a part of your pack, but if you walk straight at him his preservation instinct is to retreat. It takes pro-active patience to work through his instincts. We set up safe spaces for him around the house. He has learned to relax in those areas with me in close proximity and now he knows those are safe spaces. We are working on not retreating in a general open area but it is SLOW and steady progress. He also becomes less afraid when I have kept him on a leash and made him follow and be near me throughout my day.

-When he is comfortable with you and feels he is safe, he loves belly and ear rubs. It is like the dog he wants to be comes out and he is just happy and silly.

-He never, ever pulls on a leash. He walks very well. Occasionally he will walk a circle around you because he didn’t realize he was in the lead and is hurrying to get back behind you.

-Housebroken: He is generally housebroken and has even learned to ask to go out. In my house they walk to the back door and stand there and look at you. He also knows what “Do you want to go pee?” means. He will pee on a leash ...eventually.....but won’t poop. For this reason, it may not be great for him to be an apartment dog. He will do better with a yard so he can go outside.

-Speed: He is super fast whether running and playing or trying to run away/escape from something that spooked him. A new owner won’t want to take any chances on leaving a front door open or holes in the fence. He has never tried to escape here, but I have been vigilant knowing if he got loose it wouldn’t be easy trying to catch him.

- Other Dogs: He LOVES being with other dogs. He runs and plays with my Golden as long as she will keep going. He may not do well with an aggressive dominant alpha but with a calm alpha he becomes the happy little sidekick dog from the cartoons, “Where are we going today boss? Huh? What cha want me to do?” He gets along very well with my Collie but she won’t run with him. She is a tripawd and straining her remaining back leg is rough on her. Other than that, they are buds. -Children: He has seemed fine with my granddaughters, basically excusing himself from the room as they made him uneasy. Kids in my house have been trained as infants how to be VERY gentle with a dog. I had him sit on the couch with us once during a Disney movie. Riley was allowed to pet him and he tolerated it but wasn’t comfortable. Given time, he might be. I would be nervous to have him with rowdy kids though.

-Food: Wesley is NOT a foodie. It has taken us a while to get him to feel comfortable enough to eat two full meals a day and it has to be tasty enough to entice him. He also is not food motivated to do anything. He will take medicine in cheese but you will have to track him down to his safe space to get him to take it.

-Wesley is fine with women (he is stuck with me most of the time) but definitely likes men. If he is on a walk and we see a group of people, he always gravitates to men first. He also thinks my husband is the king and is more likely to just run up to him for love than any other person.

Wesley will need a patient adopter who will work with him so he feels comfortable. Once he does he will make a nice family member.

If you would like to adopt Wesley, please apply by CLICKING ON THE ADOPTION APPLICATION LINK AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE.
