My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Shelby is a super sweet girl with a wonderful temperament and endearing personality. She's a petite 22 lbs but has huge personality! She’s eager to please, likes to be with her people, walks well on leash, rides really well in the car, is house broken, gets along great with other dogs of all sizes and both genders (cats: unknown), and has more get-up-and-go than you might expect a senior dog to have.

Shelby’s foster mom had her DNA tested, and the results came back as follows: 12.5% Australian Cattle Dog (ACD), 12.5% Border Collie, 12.5% Chow Chow, and 62.5% Unknown mixed breeds within the following AKC groups: Hound, Terrier, Sporting, and Herding.

Shelby likes to be near her people and is loyal to her family. She's protective in an adorable way (meaning that she barks at people and animals she sees on the other side of the backyard fence). The only other time she ever barks is when she’s ready to come back inside after a potty/sniff break in the backyard and one of her people isn’t standing by the door to let her in immediately. Ha! (And then she just voices one or two quick barks. She is not a “barky” dog by any means.)

Shelby enjoys cooler temperatures and loves snow. She is not, however, a fan of ice. (But who is, really?!) Typical of a senior dog she has arthritis so her foster parents have a lot of area rugs and mats throughout the tiled and wood flooring parts of the house, which Shelby makes good use of when she’s in these areas. And when it snows, they keep the walks and patio shoveled and use pet-friendly ice melt to remove the threat of ice on the outdoor surfaces.

Shelby is in excellent shape for her age. She may have some hearing loss but that definitely doesn't get in her way of enjoying life! For her knee pain, she’s on a low, daily dose of gabapentin, which manages her pain quite well. Shelby has been quite itchy at times so we've been working closely with our vet to determine if it is food or environmental. She just started a new antibiotic and along with that, herbal remedies have helped lessen the itching.

Shelby's ideal forever family will live in a ranch/one-story house that has either no, or just one or two, steps into/out of it. Also, if the house has any slick flooring, those areas should include area rugs or mats. Shelby likes going on short walks (10-15 minutes max) where she has a chance to sniff all the smells; but she’s also fine with just wandering around a fenced yard and taking in all the sights and smells at her leisure. Because of her easy going temperament, Shelby would be fine as either the only dog in the family or in a multi-dog household. An older person or couple with either older or no children living at home would be perfect for her.

In short, Miss Shelby is a joy! She’s laid back most of the time but gets a little frisky and likes to play at least once or twice a day. She’s also very food motivated, which makes it easy to teach her new things. If you’re looking for a sweet, loving, and loyal companion to hang out with you while you read or watch TV, putter about in the garden/backyard, and be nearby while you’re in the kitchen (just in case you drop any food, doncha know!), then Shelby is the girl for you.
