Here's what the humans have to say about me:
"Wendell" is an approx 4-yo, 70-lb neutered male GSD mix with a calm, sweet demeanor. Wendell is very affectionate and likes to be wherever his people are. He loves to cuddle, and if not allowed on the couch he'll nuzzle his head under your arms. Wendell is very friendly with everyone he meets; he's a people-dog, for sure! He still occasionally greets people by very gently standing and putting his paws on their chest, but this behavior is becoming less frequent.
No worries about overly-protective behavior with Wendell; if you're looking for a good watchdog, keep looking! Wendell is good with young kids and presently lives with a 7-yr old girl (Rayne). See elsewhere on this page for a very cute video of Wendell playing with a "flirt pole" handled by Rayne's friend Abby.
Wendell has proven himself to be good with other dogs for the most part, but every now and then he gets into it with another dog for some reason. When Wendell came to stay at my place on Dec 9, he was initially very defensive of his personal space and would growl any time a dog got too close. However, within a few days that behavior disappeared altogether. It was obvious to me that Wendell had not received much socialization w/ other dogs previously, and his improvement over such a short time has been amazing. He's now living peacefully (for the most part) with two large female dogs in a foster home.
Wendell is housetrained for the most part; it's been a learning experience for him as he was clearly an outdoor dog previously. While Wendell was at my house (which has a dog door) for a week, he never had an accident inside. However, at his foster home he's had some accidents when left inside uncrated. His foster mom keeps him in a crate at night, as he can pace restlessly if left loose.
Wendell has exhibited some separation anxiety when left inside alone, so he would best be kept outdoors or inside in a crate when his people are gone--at least until he's comfortable in his new home.
Wendell walks well on a leash and rides great in a car--very calm, even for long distances. He rode with his head in my lap all the way from south Sacramento the first time he was in my truck.
GSRSV rescued Wendell from the Stanislaus County Shelter on 12-9-17 just a day before he was going to be put down. He's been in a foster home in Oakdale since 12-15-17. Wendell's adoption fee is $160.
