My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

McLaren is estimated to be a 9-12 month old black lab/boxer mix. She weighs about 35 pounds. She was a stray in Roswell, New Mexico, before ending up in a shelter, where she was given only 10 days to be adopted. On the 10th day, she was scheduled to be euthanized for space. Just hours before her anticipated death, we pulled her out in order to give her more time to find a home. Arrangements were made for her to be driven to Davis, California for foster care, where she currently resides. She is spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. The vet prescribed antibiotics for a slight cough she has, likely from a respiratory infection she picked up at the shelter. She has completed the course of antibiotics and has since been doing well.

McLaren was hesitant around me at first, but with the help of a little peanut butter, she gained my trust on the first day. McLaren will likely be shy and scared when you first meet her too, but once she trusts you, she is very sweet and seeks affection. She reacts to much of the world as if it's brand new to her - I don't think she got out much in her prior life. She likes to assess new things from a distance at first (things such as shopping carts, bicycles, etc), but she warms up quickly once she realizes they won't cause her harm. She gains confidence with repeated exposure to these new things, and does well with encouragement from people she trusts. She feeds off of confidence from other dogs as well - For example, if she is walking with a more confident dog, and both dogs are approached by a stranger, McLaren will hang back until the other dog shows her it's ok to be pet by the stranger. For this reason, McLaren would do best in a home with another dog she can continue to learn from, or in a home with someone who is patient and willing to help McLaren understand that the world is full of good. Simply by providing her a routine she can count on everyday, she has already made leaps and bounds of positive progress. She rides well in the car. She has good manners when kept in the kennel overnight; only minimal whining when first left alone, then she quickly settles and chews nicely on the toys she is provided. She is very playful, and loves fetch and tug. She does very well on leash walks.

I have not had the opportunity to assess her with swimming pools, doggy doors, or kids, but I do not anticipate any problems if introductions are done properly. A house without cats would be best - She thinks it's fun to chase them.

Completion of an adoption application, and a visit to your home will be required for McLaren’s safety, as well as an adoption to fee to help offset some of the costs associated with her rescue. To meet McLaren in person in Davis, California, contact her foster-mom, Alexa by texting or calling 602-309-1038, or emailing palominotreasure@aol.com.
