My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Walter is a 3 year old Harlequin male, with natural ears.
He previously lived with another 5 year old great Dane and had no issues with him. Walter has had no problems in the past with dog parks and other dogs, but he forgets his size and has no problem galloping around, so you will need to watch him carefully to make sure he doesn’t get too rowdy! Seeing other dogs across the street or passing in the sidewalk he will try to pull you across the street to meet them.
Walter has a HIGH prey instinct, so smaller dogs, cats, squirrels, birds etc. are not his friends, and he forgets any command you give him as all he wants to do is “hunt” that small animal. He cannot be placed in a home with cats. On the flip side, Walter has no issues being around children, but again, you need to watch him as he truly does forget how big he is, and a simple turn around in a hallway will knock a child over-completely by accident! Walter will only be placed in a home with older children as babies confuse him.
Walter will “mumble” back at you at certain commands when he feels as though he doesn’t “need” to listen to you, but he knows sit, stay, come, paw, speak, and healing on a leash is still a work in progress. Walter loves to play with the other Great Dane in the house, will run back and forth tossing a tennis ball for thirty minutes if you let him! Loves to play tug of war with the big ropes with the other Great Dane or any human.
Walter is house broken, but does well on a schedule but consistency is key with him, he has no problem being alone with his Great Dane brother for 9-10 hours a day if need be. On the weekends and evenings he will follow you wherever you go, connected to your hip (literally) all day long. He loves to snuggle, loves the spa (or bathing him yourself) he can even swim but takes a while to get him to hop into a pool as I believe he thinks he will sink or forget to “doggie paddle”.
Walter will be adopted out with a training requirement to ensure his good manners continue and to work on his leash skills.
Walter’s foster family has a 55 pound female shepherd mix. Walter met her enthusiastically and they have since become friends. He loves playing with her and they like to lie next to each other. He has shared his food with her and shows no food guarding behaviors. His foster family also has a chinchilla, Walter has shown some interest, but no more than any other dog that has come over to the house for the first time. After a week in the house, he shows little to no interest in the chinchilla.
It is evident that Walter has had obedience training, but he only listens to commands when he wants to so he will need a refresher. He shows very good behavior at meal time – he typically lays on the couch in the living room while his foster family eats. He does not come to the table and has not begged for food. He also has not tried to take anything off the table or counters. His foster family is working to introduce him to crates. So far, he has been a good boy and stays in the crate for 45 to 60 minutes without complaint.
Walter is great company to his foster dad that works from home. He follows his people everywhere and wants to sit next to (or on top of) his family. As his foster mom is typing this bio, he is laying with his head in her lap fast asleep. He loves to snuggle and has amazingly soft fur. He also enjoys playing fetch, tug of war and chewing on rubber toys. His is a sweet boy who will thrive in a structured environment with strong leadership.

2/21/18 Water Update
Walter’s favorite thing in the world is tennis balls. He LOVES playing fetch inside or out and frequently tries to get two or three tennis balls in his mouth. He thinks it hilarious to roll his tennis balls under the couch and try to get them back out. He gets very excited for walks and is getting better on a leash. He goes out for short walks multiple times a day, so he gets in lots of practice. He has a toy basket filled with toys and entertains himself for hours pulling them all out. He has a great memory and somehow remembers where he left his toys the night before. Around bedtime, Walter likes to snuggle on the couch with his people and fall asleep while getting pets. He easily goes in his crate with a Kong and a little peanut butter, he has spent up to 4 hours in the crate without a problem. He even goes in the crate to lay down. Walter is a big softy who just wants to play with you and be with you.

Update 3/30/18
Walter continues to get better with his leash walking. He now goes on walks up to 30 minutes and is not pulling as much. He is interested in birds and squirrels, but no more than any other dog. Walter and his foster sister are getting along well. They frequently play tug of war or wrestle with each other. Walter is showing he truly is a gentle giant always being careful not to be too rough with her. He also recently met a 20lb dog that came over for the day. Walter was a bit unsure at first, but quickly warmed up and just wanted to play with this new friend. He showed no signs of aggressive behavior. Walter is a happy, goofy guy that loves company.
