My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

* COURTESY POST:

Hi! Meet Ritz!

Ritz has the story of almost every street kitty we rescue. He was unwanted, uncared for and barely saved from euthanasia by someone who thinks kitties are dispensable.

Ritz's mom was deemed a "feral" cat by the man who found her kittens in his backyard. She lived on the streets in Downey after being abandoned when her owners moved on and left her behind to fend for herself. Of course, she wasn't fixed. The only good thing that happened to her was that people took pity on her and began feeding her. There were several feeders caring for her, but nobody thought to get her fixed. So, like many street cats, she looked for a safe spot to give birth and keep her litter safe from raccoons, coyotes and people. She picked the wrong yard.

Ritz was born with 4 siblings in the backyard of a man who took them into his home. When mama was insistently meowing outside, he allowed her to come inside to nurse and would then kick her back out. This went on for a few weeks and he was leaving for vacation. He took all the kittens in a box to the Downey shelter where they were to be euthanized, like almost 100% of all street kitties who are surrendered. Another volunteer who happened to be there, heard the story and asked where mama was. She took the box and drove to his house to find mama. She in fact, turned out to be quite tame and friendly, just scared. She brought the family home and allowed mama to nurse her babies until they were ready to be weaned. Mama affectionately named "Downey" was fixed (also available) and the kittens were socialized.

Ritz is a playful, inquisitive, loving, smart youngster who loves to be around people and other kittens. He has become quite an adorable little guy! He is great with small dogs, calm children (one of his fosters has down syndrome) and is a great little traveler. He would love to have a sibling or another kitty of his own, as well as a wonderful human who can shower him with love. All of our kitties have a rough start in life and we do what we do so that we can turn that around and prevent litters from being born on the streets with TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return). It prevents the suffering and death of little ones like Ritz, who is one of the lucky ones!
