Lovely Mirrhi is approximately 2 to 3 years old and came to us from a shelter in southern Utah. She weighs about 42 pounds. Her name means “little girl” in an Australian Aboriginal language. We believe she is an Australian Cattle Dog mix, although she really doesn’t show typical cattle dog traits. She’s timid around sheep and horses when we go out to feed, she won’t try to heel another dog when he or she is playing fetch, and she could care less about cats.
Mirrhi is very good in the house. She’s housetrained and hasn’t taken or chewed on anything she shouldn’t. She was initially a bit of a counter surfer and was very interested in the garbage (no doubt as a result of the fact that she arrived to us quite thin), but after being verbally guided a few times these things have not been an issue. She rides well in the car (in a crate) and is progressing on her leash manners. She crates well and accepts being locked behind a dog gate for several hours without becoming destructive. She also takes treats gently and handles verbal corrections well. Her foster mom says she has not yet heard Mirrhi bark!
As we mentioned, she’s good with cats. She’s also been good with other dogs of both sexes and is not toy or food possessive. (She really hasn’t shown an interest in toys although she’s VERY interested in food!) She has just begun to play with the male dog in her foster home and seems to really enjoy having canine siblings to show her the ropes and lend her confidence.
This little girl LOVES to cuddle on the couch and will stretch out next to you with her chin on your chest and lie there just as long as you let her. If you’re working or sitting at a table she will sometimes come over for pets but will often go back to her “bedroom” and lie quietly in her crate. She’s been very quiet in her foster home, only rarely making a muted “moof” if the other dogs are reacting to something.
It’s hard to find much negative to say about Mirrhi, other than she can have a strong and immediate flight instinct when something scares her, so she may not be a candidate for off leash walks in the forest. She also appears to have a phobia about baths, or possibly just received her first one when she came to our rescue. When she arrived Mirrhi was extremely sound sensitive, especially to dogs barking, but her confidence has been growing daily and she handles loud TV shows and kitchen noises now without raising an eyebrow.
We feel Mirrhi would do best in a non-urban setting with calm surroundings and with a patient owner who is willing to work with her to help her overcome her fears. Due to Mirrhi's strong flight response to things that startle her, you must have a fenced yard to adopt Mirrhi.
