My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

“You have to want a baby” I told a friend of mine recently. Her sister-in-law was interested in adopting Willa. As it turned out, her husband didn’t want another dog. I thought that worked out well. Willa is not a dog (at least to my eyes).

I raised Willa as one might a baby. (I have no children, this is just my perspective) She sleeps with me and she eats with me. She eats from a fork and amazingly understood how to eat from a spoon. I brush her teeth in the morning after I brush my own (different brush!). She appears in the bathroom when she hears my electric toothbrush. I always follow the brushing up with a treat.

She gets dressed with me in the morning. After I finish, if she is not there already I call “baby girl” and here she comes. I brush her hair, put in a barrette and slide a “pretty” around her neck. A pretty is one of a collection of lace, crochet and cloth collars. At night, we “skin a rabbit” when I take it off her.

At lunch (my main meal) she sits down with me. She would not understand not having a seat at the table. She has her own fork and gets tiny morsels of whatever I might be eating that is appropriate. She cleans my plate as a rule unless I’ve had something spicy. She loves most vegetables with carrots and sugar snap peas being like candy. She also loves the ribs from lettuce. It gives her a good crunch. She loves ice cream and I give her just a dab on my spoon when I finish mine. I feed her Royal Canin with a tiny bit of roast chicken each morning. Her food bowl stays down all day and I will add to her bowl before bed. I moisten the Royal Canin with just a bit of water. Willa had a few bouts of bloody diarrhea when she was younger. I have had no problem since we went to the Royal Canin food. Her treats are Blue Bits.

Willa is piddle pad trained and doesn’t go outside to potty. She likes her privacy and her potty/bed enclosure is behind the couch at my house. We call it the “Castle” (she’s a princess). “Go to your castle” means time out. She will actually put herself in time out if I scold her and then peek around the couch sometime later to ask if it is time to come out. I have used both washable and disposable piddle pads for her. I keep one in the car and she is very good about using it.

She doesn’t walk well on the leash. I have tried walking with her (it is my favorite form of exercise) but she often pulls on the leash and chokes herself. With a little work, she would probably do okay. I have been hesitant to do more with her as I am content not to have her outside on the ground and deal with fleas and ticks. I have a large deck on the house and she does play on it in the warmer months. I have never had to put up gates, she knows and observes her boundaries. In a new environment I do watch her closely though.

Willa is not much of a lap dog. That said, as I write this she is lying on my legs. She likes to be held…for about a minute. She is quite independent. But if she hears something strange, she will bark and then run to me and into my lap if I am sitting down. She snuggles at night against me.

Willa has traveled a good deal. As a family we had a home in Florida where we went in the winter so she has flown a number of times. She gets a bit antsy in the car in the beginning of a car trip but will eventually settle down.

I do not “want” to rehome Willa. I have gone through a divorce and a complete lifestyle change. I now have the opportunity to work and live overseas. But that is not the only reason to rehome Willa. She came from a litter of 8, yes 8! We adopted her into a home with a Bichon and an elderly Norwegian Forest cat. She and the cat played until he was no longer able (we lost him a couple of years ago). The Bichon unfortunately pretty much ignored her. Willa has been accustomed to a lot of activity and interaction with adults and other animals. It is just she and I now and she seems lonely. So the reason for putting her up for adoption is really twofold. I love her dearly and she is my baby and this has been and is an incredibly hard decision for me.
