My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Fostered in Abingdon, Md

Barney is a 27 lb beagle mix, estimated to be approx. 5-6 yrs old.  He was found as a stray and ended up in a Maryland shelter. It's sad to think he almost didn't make it out because Barney LOVES people and will walk up to strangers for kisses. He's a snuggler too and when you sit on the floor with him, he will climb into your lap, lay his head down, and beg for belly and chin rubs. He is also fantastic with dogs of all sizes. Barney is house trained, and likes to nap by your feet. He's content sleeping in a dog bed, but loves to be close enough to cuddle.

Barney is very quiet for a beagle, though he does bark to say hello to other dogs. Barney would love to have a doggie sibling - he loves playing tag and wrestling with big dogs, and will adapt his play style to small dogs.  Barney would benefit from a fenced yard or a family that will walk him in parks and through trails every day, as he likes to follow his nose and sniff out all the scents. His adopters must know that he can never be left off-leash. This is for his own safety, to insure he doesn't wonder off to smell something new.

Barney is best suited for a calm and stable home - he is great with children on walks and at adoption events, but he'd be happiest in a quieter home.  His ideal family would be retired, have a flexible work schedule/work from home, or have the ability to take him into the office or put him into doggie daycare.  Barney bonds very quickly with men, but loves to be fussed on by anyone! Most importantly, he's just looking for someone that has a lot of time to snuggle and to spoil him with interactive toys, puzzles and kongs.

Barney is extremely food motivated and picks up commands quickly.  He's looking for a family that will continue his training, and work with him to build his confidence.  His new family will need to realize Barney needs time to adapt and relax in a new environment, but by giving him a routine and structure, he will be a devoted member of your pack.

My adoption fee is $300, which covers the cost of routine vetting, rabies and distemper/parvo vaccinations, deworming, spay/neuter surgery, heartworm testing, my microchip, monthly heartworm prevention, monthly flea/tick prevention, and any transport costs if applicable.

You can save animals like this one by becoming a foster home for a dog in need! Fosters are like way stations between high kill shelters and forever homes. We need fosters so that we can save dogs before they are euthanized at the shelters. If you are interested in becoming a foster, please check out our information about fostering on our website under 'How you can help.' MMR covers the vet care, food, and tools to get started. You supply the love. Fostering saves lives. Sometimes a foster home is the only thing standing between life and death.
