My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Baron, or as his foster mom calls him- Beary Bear! He's a German Wirehaired Pointer/mix.

This sweet boy earned his nickname because all he wants is lots of love! Baron came to the GSP Rescue of New Jersey all the way from South Korea where he and one other dog were surrendered. Baron was just skin and bones at this time, but is now about 60lbs and still needs to gain at least 10 more! Although he is a big boy, he is very gentle and always wants to put his head in people’s laps for pets and always seems to have a smile on his face. Baron is seven years old and blind although no one ever believes his foster mom when she says so! Baron does not let his lack of sight stop him from enjoying life as he still likes to go for walks and play his version of “fetch.” He also enjoys chewing on bones and playing with his kongs, but what he loves most is cuddling!

Baron has seen a specialist about his eyes and his blindness is due to retina degeneration (cones and rods) and unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to help him. Baron also has cataracts beginning to form so his future owners will need to look out for symptoms such as pain or irritation, but otherwise he does not need to go back to a specialist since there is nothing that can be done. Because of his lack of eyesight, he will need a clutter free home and yard for him to romp around in. Baron can get over stimulated in a new environment but once the area becomes familiar to him he walks around nicely without bumping into things!

Baron was used as a hunting dog before his eyesight declined so he still likes to walk around nose first and follow little animal trials and will pull if he catches a fresh scent, otherwise he walks nicely with a front leading harness or a head halter on a short leash. Baron does not seem to mind other dogs his size and was very patient with his crazy foster brother before he was adopted however he would be best with siblings of equal size and temperament. He seems confused by smaller dogs so he will only be placed with a family with dogs around his size and without cats- he is a bit too interested in them!

When Baron came to us we were told that he had food aggression issues with other dogs but it seems that he is more surprised than upset when someone else sticks their head into his bowl however he may need to be separated from future four legged siblings at feeding time in the beginning. Baron would do well with a family with older children that will understand his limitations. He will need a physical fence and not an IV as he likes to lean against the fencing while learning the perimeter. Baron is crate trained however he now has the run of his foster home while everyone is away at work (about 8 hours).

Baron is not high energy but is willing to go wherever his people are, if that means having a lazy day or going on a long 5 mile walk, he is right by your side! Baron is all around a good boy who just wants to be loved and would make a great companion for most families.
