Hi, my name is Max, or as my foster mama likes to call me Maxie Man, the Wonder Dog!

As you can see from my pictures, I am a handsome yellow Labby boy with lovely eyes. I cannot tell you if I get my looks from my mom or dad because I don’t know who they are but I’m betting they are were the prom king and queen! I love to be with my people and I LOVE TREATS! I will do anything for a treat. If you pet and cuddle with me, I will be there all day with you. I am also house and crate trained.

I have been through training and my foster mom has been working with me for a while to continue my obedience and control. Working for treats is great. I am not big on toys…I don’t remember having toys (the streets don’t have many toys). You see, I was found as a stray. I had to learn to survive out there in the great big world by myself. It was sad out there alone but being in a home with my human is the BEST!

What I am working on right now is being more social with other dogs. Growing up as a stray, I learned that some dogs are a threat. I also learned to react to most dogs as a survival skill. Sometimes I just don’t like other dogs very much. I have been working hard with my foster mom on that and getting much better. I have tried to have fights with male dogs so you’ll need to help me keep that the good work I have been doing to like all dogs. Growing up as a stray, no one read the ‘rule book’ to me. I would sure like for you to read me that story and keep me on the best path!

I am looking for a person or a couple who just wants to be a one-dog family for a while and will keep up with my training. I’ve been doing really well lately…it sure would be nice to be able to learn with you. I need someone who understands that I just need guidance as I grow old with you. I’m probably not too good for a household with small children as I am sometimes bouncy.

If you are interested in me, please fill out an application and tell them you’d like more info on Maxie Man, the Wonder Dog! My foster mom is happy to talk to you, as well.

Max attended a two-week board and train class where he learned basic obedience and some dog socialization. Max would benefit from continued daily training and socialization.

Here are the notes from the trainer that worked with Max:

Thank you for giving me a chance to work with Max. He is a very smart boy. He is an insecure boy, though, and will need a home with structure, rules, and guidance. I spoke with his foster about continuing Dog Social with him to give him that chance to be around a lot of dogs so he can learn how to interact properly. He does great when introduced to other dogs in a calm manner. He did great at Dog Social. He did try to pick on a weaker energy dog the first time, but he was corrected and that was the end of it. The second Dog Social he had no issues with 2 younger dogs getting in his face or them getting rowdy with play, but he did try to get in on a few minor fights between other dogs….one small correction from me to let him know not to get involved was all it took for him. He wants to please, he just needs to know what the rules are. I think he would be fine in a home with another dog as long as he has a good introduction and the new owners lay down rules and boundaries from the start.

Teaching Max to "stay": I use the dog bed to help him out and give him a spot to stay on. Max is one of those dogs that wants to be near you every second so I gradually increase my distance and duration. He's super food motivated so I'm using treats every time he stays and I come back to him.

He can be a bit of a Velcro dog so “place” work with him every day will help him to learn to just chill out without having to be right on top of his person. He can also be a bit pushy and stubborn about thresholds so it’s important for his new owners to establish their leadership by not letting him go through doorways before them. He’s one of those types that knows what’s expected but is still going to try to test the rules. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns and feel free to give his new owners my contact info also.

Max loves people and wants to be with his people. He is very loyal and would make a good companion for someone who is active and wants to take Max with them to exercise and go on walks/runs/hikes. Max would be happiest if he can hang out with his new owner and do fun active stuff. He is a young dog with a lot of energy and enjoys walks and would likely enjoying running and even agility and nose-work.

Max loves going for walks and his trainer recommended that a Halti or nose halter be used to walk him. Since the Halti has been used, Max has been a dream to walk.

Max is crate-trained and house-trained. He is neutered, current on vaccines and microchipped. He did test positive for heartworms and we are treating him with the slow kill treatment for heartworms which consists of monthly Heartgard for the rest of his life. He should test negative for heartworms within the next year or so. IDOG will provide monthly Heartgard for him until February 2018.
