My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

GINGER is a 7-month-old spayed female chocolate lab. Ginger weighs 32 pounds and is up to date on shots. This dog is approved for homes with children ages 10 and up.

DESCRIPTION Ginger is part of a litter of 5 older puppies. This super cute crew of puppies will melt your heart the minute you meet them. They are the perfect blend of curious yet cautious, sweet yet shy, and off the charts adorable. It doesn't seem like these pups have received much love, attention, or direction so far, and some are very timid and nervous about meeting new people. They are looking for a home with patient humans and experienced dogs that will welcome them and teach them the basic skills that every lab needs to know. They were an owner surrender because the owner could no longer afford to feed them

Update: Ginger is making tiny tiny improvements. She is energetic and playful when the alarm goes off in the morning, will bounce around and wag, but once we're up we're still scary. We've started taking her for walks early in the morning with her two foster brothers and feel like that's helping. She is still quite skittish on the walks but getting better. She eats well, albeit on her own, and seems to be getting more interested in what's going on around the house. She will thrive with a home that is patient and has a dog who will bring her along. When we have activity in the house we will keep her out for a bit, but then open the bedroom door so she can go to her safe space and not get too overwhelmed. So we don't shut down because she's here, just give her space when she needs it and push her little bits at a time to make her world a little bigger and less scary. She is just so sweet.

Update: Ginger continues to take baby steps. She experienced her first outside puppy sitter last weekend and did well. He said she even let him pet her! We continue to go for walks and I think she's actually starting to enjoy them, once the horror of going out the front door has been overcome. She is starting to really experience the big world of the living room as her regular stomping grounds. On nights we watch TV she will hop up on the couch with us, which I am sure we enjoy more than she does. She loves her boy dogs and takes comfort from them. On walks she will often strive to get near them. I feel safe too with nearly 200 pounds of dog escorting us! And she snuggles in with all of us at night. She's even taken to laying on her back!!

Update: Ginger is working hard at being brave and gaining confidence a little at a time. She spent a week with a temporary foster to try and shake her out of a rut and her temp foster just fell in love with this little cutie. She is excellent with other dogs, and is submissive with them. She enjoys their company, and they each took turns looking after her like a little sister. New things are scary for this little nugget as she's lived such a sheltered life, but her sweetness will win you over quickly. She settled in quickly to the "safe" zone of the couch, and easily shared kisses with temporary foster mom. Ginger likes getting her ears rubbed, and will snuggle in for a snooze next to you on the couch. She also loves sleeping in bed with the humans and dogs at bedtime (and even snuck a few kisses!), and will join in the fun of snuggles and playtime when everyone wakes up in the morning. The scariest part of life for sweet Ginger is being outside - she will dash out to do her business when asked, but then wants to dash right back in the house. She's been doing a little better each day just hanging out on the safety of the outdoor furniture watching the big dogs play chase, tackle and fetch. More positive, happy experiences outside will help her continue to learn that it's a cool place to be. She is house trained and happily hops into the safety of the crate while foster mom is at work. She knows her name, and will come when asked with a bit of encouragement. This girl is going to continue to grow and will thrive with love, patience and time.
