My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Peaches is a beautiful yorkie-poo who is 8 years old and weighs 12 lbs. Peaches is both hearing and vision-impaired. She is being fostered in Ft. Myers, FL.
UPDATED BIO 09/30/2018: Peaches has had a busy 10 weeks since she first came into UYR. This precious little girl came to us from a high-kill shelter where she spent over 3 weeks and was scheduled to be euthanized. United Yorkie Rescue stepped up to the plate to save her and to give her the best possible chance at having a loving, forever home.

Peaches is both hearing and vision-impaired and this is likely the reason she was surrendered to the shelter by her previous owners. She does have some hearing and responds well when she is approached gently. Because she also has limited vision, her foster parents have been working with her to gain her trust and find the best way to approach her so that she is not startled.

Peaches has really bonded to her foster dad and enjoys all the attention she gets in her foster home. She loves her foster parents’ grandchildren as well, but they are teenagers, so she could go into a home with children older than 14 as long as the home is calm and quiet and the teenagers understand her special needs.

Peaches is a very loving little sweetheart who craves affection. She is initially cautious of strange situations and people due to her vision and hearing-impairments. She loves bath-time and especially loves the 20-minute coconut oil massages that Foster Mom gives her, being very still and in her zen state of mind. Her foster parents say that she is a very easy-going little girl who loves being with her humans.

Peaches has seen the doggie opthalmologist for her 4-week re-check and not much has changed. Her pressure in the left eye remains the same which is good and she will need daily eyedrops for the rest of her life so that she is comfortable and pain-free. Peaches is pee-pee-pad trained and also walks nicely on the leash given her vision challenges. Foster Mom says that she will be a great companion dog to a family who is willing to accommodate her special needs. She is a happy, tail-wagging little girle that is as close to perfect as you can get.

Peaches is in no pain and should not have any pain as long as she is receiving her RX eyedrops. Her perfect home would be one where there is at least one stay-at-home parent since Peaches loves attention and being very close to her person. If you are looking for a snuggle-bunny, then Peaches is your girl! Please don’t turn away from this sweet and precious little girl due to her special needs. Peaches will be your loyal constant companion and she has so much love to give.

UPDATED BIO 08/20/2018: Peaches has had a busy 6 weeks since she first came into UYR. This precious little girl came to us from a high-kill shelter where she spent over 3 weeks and was scheduled to be euthanized. United Yorkie Rescue stepped up to the plate to save her and to give her the best possible chance at having a loving, forever home.

Peaches has seen the doggie opthalmologist and sadly, there is little that can be done about her vision impairments, which are multiple. Her right eye has shrunken due to a chronic end-state condition called phthisis bulbi, making it a non-functional eye. This condition was likely caused by either inflammation or injury. Peaches’ left eye has a hypermature cataract and has a subluxation – or shifting - of the lens. Both eyes have an inherited condition common to several breeds of dogs, including the terrier breed, called vitreal degeneration. These conditions are being treated with daily eyedrops, and Peaches will return to the ophthalmologist in 6 weeks for a re-check. At that time, we will know if she will need eyedrops for the rest of her life.

Peaches is in no pain now that she is receiving soothing eyedrops. Her perfect home would be one where there is at least one stay-at-home parent since Peaches loves attention and being very close to her person. If you are looking for a snuggle-bunny, then Peaches is your girl! Due to her hearing/vision impairments, an adult-only home is necessary. Please don’t turn away from this sweet and precious little girl due to her special needs. Peaches will be your constant companion who has so much love to give.
