My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

What a cutie!! Meet Missy, a charming adult female with an ever-wagging tail. We are guessing her year of birth might be some time in 2012. Currently overweight at eleven pounds, we have her on a special diet regimen to get her back down to a proper eight pounds. Not sure of her breed, possibly Yorkshire Terrier mix, she has a beautiful soft non-shedding salt and pepper coat that will require brushing and regular professional grooming. Missy arrived at the Safehouse on 11/14/2016; she was originally turned over to another shelter by her elderly owner who was unable to care for her. Missy had a hard time adjusting to shelter life, scared and depressed, overwhelmed by the presence of so many unfamiliar dogs, Missy was stressed out, easily overstimulated, cautious and slow to trust people. We worked with Missy to help her cope with her anxiety and gain more confidence; over time she settled in but continued to long for solitude. We were thrilled when Missy was adopted in 2017 by a very caring guardian; however she was returned about a year later after family issues forced her broken hearted “mom” to bring her back. Missy returned sad and confused, seriously overweight (too many loving treats) and a resulting urinary tract infection. We provided much needed attention in hopes of alleviating her stress level and a special diet regimen. Everyone was so happy when Missy was adopted a second time earlier this year only to be disappointed when she was returned a few months later. It can take Missy a while to find her comfort zone and it was challenging for her and her new caregiver to adjust to their new partnership. Transitioning to a new environment can be overwhelming for a dog and the adopter must be willing to devote the necessary time and patience to understand and allow the relationship to develop. Missy is housetrained but will need time and guidance adjusting to your household rules and routine. She has lived with a cat and other small dogs but she would prefer to be an “only” dog in the household of a single or adult couple where she could be the spoiled center of attention and rule the castle. She prefers to be in charge of her interactions with humans and loves being the queen of her own little kingdom. No couch potato lap pet, this little girl thrives on daily “on-leash” exercising walks. Missy is healthy, spayed, has a microchip, is current on all vaccines, heartworm and flea/tick preventative and has had a complete physical and dental. The adoption fee for Missy is $300.
