My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!

Gidget is a sweet, active, alert 7 old female Shih Tzu. She weighs 12 pounds, a great Shih Tzu size! She came into rescue from a puppy mIll in Iowa, where her sole purpose was to have puppies. Consequently, Gidget has had a lot to learn. After living in a cage 24/7 for her entire life, she didn’t know about living in a home with people, hearing strange noises like the television, household activity, general conversation, being touched or held, and all those things that normal dogs are accustomed to. She also had never encountered the outside world, so just going outside was new, yet fearful, to her. It took a week or two for her to learn to walk on a leash, and to walk around the block with her foster parents’ two other dogs. Now she has blossomed into being a regular dog!! She loves to walk, but is still hesitant to be picked up, but is accepting of it and will allow you to do so. She stays on one level in her foster home, and is earning to navigate the steps. She can hop up two steps and then two more steps to come into the kitchen from the back yard. She hasn’t learned to go down steps yet, but will eventually conquer this feat as well.

Gidget prefers to be near at least one of her people all of the time and sleeps in her foster parents’ room at night in her own bed. Her house training is progressing; she is not trained yet but working on it, so her adopters will have to keep her on a schedule and continue helping her to become fully trained. Gidget is good at riding in a car. She has a sweet and gentle disposition, and as she continues to learn and become more confident we feel her fun personality will emerge. Right now she is pretty reserved but she seems to react well with people of all ages and with other dogs. She would do best in a quiet home where all of the family members understand her reservations and will give her time to learn and progress at her own pace. Given patience, guidance and understanding, Gidget will be a remarkably happy little girl and wonderful companion. She should also be in a home with another small dog to help her continue to learn.

Gidget is spayed, has had a dental, is microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Her only health issue is dry eye, which requires the daily administration of eye drops. She will require the eye drops twice a day for the rest of her life, so please consider the attention and cost this will entail. Her foster parents would like her new family to live within 50 miles of their home in Minneapolis and encourage them to attend the rescue reunion held in September each year.

Gidget’s adoption fee is $270.00 plus $20.32 sales tax for a total of $290.32. To meet Gidget, please complete an adoption application. Or you can also see her and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Minnetonka Petco near Ridgedale the first Saturday of every month.
