My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Max - Black Lab or Lab mix - young - approximately 2 years of age - male/neutered - 55/60 pounds - black short coat

If we had to use just one word to describe Max, it would be that he is a cuddler. If we could use two words we would say that he is a champion cuddler. Having lived his entire first year outdoors, tied out on a chain, the experience of touch is a profound joy to Max. He is extremely tactile. He loves to be stroked and brushed. He loves to snuggle. He dearly loves to lean in to people for reassurance and hugs.

Max was fortunate to have found advocates at the Animal Control facility to which he was eventually sent; there, a Hedgesville Hounds volunteer who helps out at the facility met him, and saw the immense potential in this honest and lovable fellow. She also recognized his longing - to learn, and to find a home and purpose. She resolved then and there to help him get there.

Max has soaked up every bit of teaching, and every new opportunity he has been offered with eagerness and determination. He has shown himself to be a responsive, cooperative, loving dog who is patient and grateful for the slightest attention. His eye contact is hopeful and expectant. Despite his early deprivation he has demonstrated absolute trust in humans and has welcomed new experiences. He rides beautifully in the car. He learns easily and enthusiastically. When encountering new situations, he looks to his human friends for guidance.

Max enjoys playing with other dogs; he greets people of all ages with openness and genuine affection. He walks well on a lead and front-clip harness. He has mastered a number of cues including “sit”, “down”, “shake”. Max seems as if he is trying hard to make up for all the lost time he spent alone on a chain - he is eager to please and abjectly pleased by praise and reassurance.

Max will need the continuing support and guidance of his adopter(s) to help him navigate the one opportunity he has never enjoyed - a real home in which he is welcomed and valued. And he will reward his family with all the love and faith in his great and trusting heart.
