My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This amazing dog is Heidi, a 4 year old Husky/German Shepherd Cross. It’s easy to fall in love with this girl - she's a beauty inside and out! Heidi is a wonderful combination of the best qualities of two of our most loved and recognizable dog breeds and will surely steal your heart. It’s hard to be perfect, but Heidi comes as close as you can get!

Heidi was adopted from a shelter in Edmonton, Alberta in 2015 when she was approximately one year of age. She’d been rescued from an abusive home where she was not fed regularly, physically abused and locked in a garage. With training, lots of love and attention, her new human helped her transform into the loving and kind dog she is today. Heidi holds no grudges against humans for the cruel treatment she endured. Instead she loves nothing more than being close to people and giving them lots of hugs and cuddles!

Not too long ago she and her human moved to Vancouver. They found it difficult to find affordable housing and it became harder and harder for them to make ends meet. The human struggled financially to keep them together, but recently it became impossible to continue as Heidi was being left alone in a small apartment for over 10 hours a day. Leaving a huge hole in her heart, Heidi’s human surrendered her to Home at Last Dog Rescue to give her the chance of a much better life with people who love her.

Heidi is not a fitness fanatic but she loves her walks, hikes, jogs and romping around the dog park. She’s leash-trained and very well behaved on walks, but pulls a bit when she’s excited. She’s not into balls or sticks - you could throw one around all day and she would never respond! She is curious about other dogs and very polite when she meets them but she doesn’t initiate play. She just chills and waits for them to invite her to join in the fun. She’s also curious about cats but she doesn’t chase them.

Heidi loves her dog treats. She’s a fast learner and she’ll do almost anything to get them. She knows what people like and that entertaining them with her howl-a thons is a sure way for her to get a yummy reward! Smart genes from the Husky and German Shepherd breeds make her one very savvy girl!

Heidi is a calm and loving dog. She's very well behaved and quiet in the house. She understands that her crate is a safe place to relax and nap. She will go into her crate if asked and rewarded with a treat. Staying alone for long periods of time will make her lonely and anxious. She’s much more relaxed and happy when her people share most of their time with her. She’s a social dog so living in the house is the only life for her, plus she fails miserably as a watch dog! She hasn’t been around many kids but interactions with them in public are always relaxed and positive. With her sweet disposition she’d probably be thrilled to have a few around to love her! However she's fairly big so she could accidentally knock over the little ones.

Heidi is spayed, vaccinated, tattooed and has had basic obedience classes. She sheds and needs regular grooming. She’s a healthy girl too but has a few food sensitivities.

For anyone looking for a wonderful new family member who has charm, good looks and a gentle, loving temperament, Heidi is the perfect choice.
