My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

This little gem's name is Tater!!   He was given his new name by his foster, and it is his first step in living the life of a happy dog with a family.......Here is his story:

Tater(formerly Cedar) is a 3 year old Maltese mix who was brought to safety from the horrors of a puppy mill.  In October, Animal Rescue Corps (ARC) was asked to assist in the removal of approximately 60 dogs from a mill bust in Mississippi.  ALL the dogs were severely neglected, matted and had various medical issues.   Tater (Tate for short) comes to MMR through our ongoing partnership with ARC.

He is currently in an experienced foster home and we are pleased that he has minimal medical issues.  He has been brought up to date on vaccines, is heart worm negative and on a monthly preventative.   He will be neutered and receive a much needed dental the week of November 17th.  It was necessary to give him a few days to settle in his foster home and continue to recover from his ordeal.  Based on pictures and footage from this mill bust, we can see that Tate was kept in a hutch...much like those used for rabbits....which was outside, with no heat or cooling air.   His feet never were on grass.  Needless to say, everything is new to this little guy.

Tate appears to be "hand shy".  He was most likely hit by the people at the mill...which is not unusual.  He is also very scared right now, but through it all, he has not shown anything but sweetness....no aggression, no attempts to bite, just a gentle little tail wag every now and then.  He will feel much better once his dental is complete....he will have some teeth extracted and that will make his over all health much better.

Tate's foster has said that he loves to take walks and is relatively relaxed while on the leash.  He is walked often, to help socialize and familiarize him with the world around him.  He is learning his house manners and working on getting on a schedule.   He will need to gain some weight, but his skin and fur are in good shape, now that he has been bathed and brushed.  His hearing and eyesight are fine.

We are  seeking a quiet, experienced Maltese home for Tate.   Experience with puppy mill dogs and their socialization is a plus but not required.   Tate will need lots of patience and love as he discovers what it means to be a real dog.   He is improving everyday, both physically and emotionally, and has shown that his spirit is not broken.   He is curious and just needs the self confidence and a permanent home with love can help him find. He must be placed in a home with another dog.

Tate will not be placed in a home with children under the age of 12, or a home that has children visit that are under the age of 12.   He has not been tested with children, but  given his timid personality, we are not recommending that he be around any child younger than 12.   We strongly recommend that he have a fenced yard to explore with his new family.  It will give him the opportunity for non leash exercise in a safe, enclosed area.

If you would like to include this sweet boy in your family, or are just looking for a little sidekick, please fill out an application today to begin the approval process.   Tater is going to be a fabulous companion for someone who will shower him with love, and offer him the patience he needs to regain his self confidence.

My adoption fee is $300, which covers the cost of routine vetting, rabies and distemper/parvo vaccinations, deworming, spay/neuter surgery, heartworm testing, my microchip, monthly heartworm prevention, monthly flea/tick prevention, and any transport costs if applicable.
