According to the previous owner, Sissy is a Newfoundland/Poodle Mix, we wonder if you might call that a Newfoundoodle. They made the very difficult decision to surrender her because she is an active dog that was knocking down their young children, one of which has stability issues. They wanted to do what was best for the dog and for the family. Sissy is a large dog and we originally thought she was close to 80 pounds. We don't know if there was an issue with how she was sitting on the scale, but she only weighed in at 60 pounds at the vet's office. Sissy is now vaccinated, spayed, heart worm tested, and microchipped. She is approximately 2 years old.
Sissy will need some manners lessons in her new home. Luckily she is crate trained and is mostly quiet in her crate. She is a lot of dog and blusters about here and there, with her fancy hair-do fluffing about as she goes. She knows how to sit and how to down for a few seconds under mild distractions but her brain sorta falls out the more excitement she feels. She likes to paw at you for attention and will fling off your glasses, scratch your arm or knock down small children in her quest to show you her love. An owner willing to have patience and work with a doggy that may have learned some rude behaviors in the past is a must.
Sissy sometimes forgets how to walk nicely on a leash and if something catches her eye she will drag you with her. So she needs an owner that will work with her on leash manners. A front clipping harness or a head collar may help, but we have not tried those on her. She came in using a buckle collar and we have had good success using a chain correction collar. We found that the buckle collar was tangling up the hair around her neck and causing mats, so the chain collar is a better option for her at this time.
Sissy tested well with people, kids and another dog when we first met her. She seems a little timid with the adult that met her, but was willing and interactive. She was fine with the kids. She was VERY pushy with the dog that she met, but was not aggressive. Now that she has relaxed in her foster home we have noticed that she does do some alert barking to noises and when she hears things while in the yard, she has also done some barking at new people from a distance, but then she will sheepishly approach them. She has been bossy with some of the dogs in the foster home and pushy enough that we felt that if left unsupervised she could be aggressive. This was seen with other female dogs with similar personalities as hers. We will give her a little bit of leeway on this one because she came into heat almost immediately upon entering the rescue, and there are a couple other female dogs that are also in heat in the foster home. She currently can go out with all the other dogs in the foster home while supervised, but we suggest she would probably do best with an easy going and playful male dog. We do not know how she will do with cats, but was overly curious about the chickens.
Because Sissy was surrendered due to her large personality and activity level we are looking for a home with a yard for her. We think it would be best for her personality and activity level.
Sissy will come when called when she is in a fenced in yard. She doesn't really play with toys. She loves to hang out with her people and to lay in your lap while you are sitting on the ground. She will need regular grooming visits, or a new owner that is comfortable with grooming their own dog. Although she is a poodle mix, she DOES SHED. If you need a hypoallergenic non-shedding breed this is not your dog. She poofs out little hair balls everywhere. This may decrease when she is regularly groomed.
Sissy's adoption fee is $250, plus $10.99 microchip registration fee. She is spayed, chipped, vaccinated, and heart worm negative.
