My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This very cute, 1 yr old pup is Toby. The Kauai Humane Society and the US Animal Health veterinarian have described him as a retriever-cross. He is very long and slender in the body though, so it's a guess! What we know for sure is that Toby is a very friendly and outgoing guy who really enjoys being around people. Due to a serious injury he only has 3 legs but it doesn’t slow him down! He gets around very well and can run with most dogs!

Toby was found as a stray in Kauai, Hawaii at the end of October. He had dragged himself up to someone’s porch after being seriously injured when he was hit by a car. The woman who found him took him to the Kauai Humane Society where he was seen by a vet. Because Toby’s leg was in very bad shape, the vet made the sad decision to amputate. During the time Toby was at the shelter no one came looking for him to take him home. But, he was well loved by the Humane Society staff.

His rescuers met him at the shelter toward the end of November and it was love at first sight! While in Kauia they volunteered to take him on some outdoor adventures. He enjoyed all of it and expressed his happiness by constantly wagging his tail! The young couple couldn’t stand the thought of leaving him in the shelter so they decided to adopt him and fly him home to live with them and their one-year-old Lab/mix in Vancouver.

Unfortunately, although Luna the Lab and Toby got along fine outside, they didn’t do so well in the confines of the small house. The situation was tense between them, so for the well-being of both dogs, the people who saved him from the shelter, made the difficult choice to find him a new home where he could be an only dog (and the centre of attention!) They love him and are heartbroken that he will not be able to spend his life with them.

Toby is a very affectionate pup - he loves to have his belly rubbed and to cuddle on the couch. He is great with people including kids (6 and older). He is a medium energy pup and loves playing with his ball or gnawing on his rope. Shorter, more frequent walks are best for Toby. He does well meeting dogs on his walks now and he enjoys visiting the dog park but he tires out quickly, especially when other dogs really want to play hard with him.

He is a fast learner and very curious too! He’s familiar with basic commands like sit, down, leave it, and come. Toby’s intelligent and easy to train. He quickly learns new tricks and easily settles into a new routine. When he’s not busy playing, Toby is calm and quiet. He’s happy to relax and watch the world go rushing by! Toby would make a terrible guard dog. He doesn’t make a peep when people come to the door and he greets everyone with big kisses!

Toby is a great dog for active families who have time to share their lives with him. He has a winning personality and is sweet-natured and eager to please. He needs regular exercise to keep him lean and strong. Most importantly he needs a forever family who can give him lots of love and attention. He wouldn't want to be alone all day while his people are off working.

He is neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped and he is housetrained and crate trained.
