My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

IDGSR WELCOMES LUKE INTO THE SAFETY OF THE RESCUE!!!!

PLEASE NOTE: If the dog you are interested in is online, he/she is still available and it is not necessary to email to inquire.

Luke is a 5-month-old pup that is full of life. He'd incredibly intelligent, has a big personality and knows exactly what's needed to make you happy. No matter how bad a day you're having, he will make you smile and laugh and the world is brighter with him in it.

He's house-, crate-, and Bailey chair trained and also easily learns commands. He LOVES food. Any kind of food and will do anything you ask for food or treats. He also gets along great with his foster brother and sister and corrects well when they tell him they're done playing. He knows what he can chew on, i.e. - his toys, and leaves shoes, furniture, etc alone. Like it was mentioned, very smart boy.

Here's Luke's background:
Luke, along with his litter-mate Levi, came to us when they were just 6-weeks-old. Levi was showing signs of being sick and not being able to eat, so their breeder took him to the vet where Levi was given a diagnosis of Canine Megaesophagus (ME or Mega-E)* and aspiration pneumonia. Right after they got back from the vet, Luke started exhibiting the same signs, them as if Luke had ME as well. At this point their breeder called and asked us to take them because they did not want to spend the money to take care of them. Of course, we said yes.

Luke got very sick in time between Levi’s diagnosis and the previous owner contacting us. He was very weak, underweight and had aspiration pneumonia by the time we were able to get him. He was immediately (along with his brother) taken to our veterinarian’s office for treatment and medication. Thankfully, he was well enough to not need to stay overnight and able to go to his foster home that night. We did get confirmation from our vet a couple of days later.

Luke is now healthy and loving life!

Here’s the asterisk (*) part to explain what Megaesophagus is:
It is a genetic condition where Luke’s esophagus is enlarged and the muscles have difficulty moving food and water to his stomach. This is very manageable by having Luke eat in an upright position and staying in that upright position for 25 minutes after eating. This is accomplished using a Bailey Chair. Here is a link for pictures and information on Bailey Chairs: https://www.baileychairs4dogs.com/our-chairs-c1jt9.

Luke’s condition has no bearing on his personality. He will grow out of the puppy stage as he gets older and learns through training. He loves working for treats and will continue to learn commands (knows 'sit', 'down', 'wait' and 'stay'). Luke just needs a little extra help to continue thriving. In return, he will shower you with all the kisses, butt-wiggles, and cuddles you can handle.
IDGSR has experience with dogs that have this condition and currently have 3 dogs in the rescue that have Mega-E (including Luke) and are more than willing to answer questions or concerns prospective adopters have.
