My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Bish: 10 year-old female chocolate Lab mix 50 lbs spayed

Background: Bish is a sweet and happy dog who has lived with one family her whole life. Her family got Bish as a puppy from her mother’s owner – mom was a black Lab and lived on a ranch, dad was most likely a herding dog breed. Bish was recently diagnosed with diabetes and is responding well to treatment. Her family’s finances are very tight and they do not think they will be able to afford the cost of the ongoing treatment. Since Bish is otherwise healthy and canine diabetes can be successfully managed with consistent treatment, the family’s vet contacted GGLRR to help the family find Bish a loving new home that is better situated to be able to help her.

What Bish’s owner says: We've had Bish since she was a puppy, her birthday is 1-31-08. My kids were ages 8 to 14 at this time (4 kids) and she has been around kids all her life. She started out as an outdoor pet but I'm a softy and brought her indoors by the 3rd year. She likes her play time whether outside chasing after a tennis ball (she doesn't necessarily fetch/release, she prefers "keep away") or indoors wrestling on the carpet. She lays around more often than plays and likes to lay around right by me (if I'm in my office, she'll sleep under my desk; if I'm in the family room, she'll lay next to the couch; if I'm cooking, she'll lay on the kitchen floor, and bedtime she likes to sleep by our bed, either my or my husband's side). She barks when someone comes to the door but nothing more aggressive than sounding intimidating, once she smells the stranger she calms down. She does fine on a leash and does well with car rides (longest I've ever taken her is about an hour drive); she understands the commands sit, stay, get on your bed (or go lay down) & she shakes "hands." We're able to come and go without worrying about her; she stays inside and uses the doggie door (she is house trained). She isn't normally around other pets but does live out in the country so there are cats that come through the yard & she doesn't seem to be bothered by them. She has adjusted to taking her insulin quite well, I give her the shot when I feed her so she's distracted (I feed her dry dog food mixed with a small amount of canned food since she started taking insulin, prior to that it has always been dry food). She's just a loving/trusting dog that likes a little attention every now and then :).

What Bish’s Rescue Rep says: Bish is a delight! When we first met Bish, she came running up to us with a friendly greeting and promptly sat in our lap to cuddle. What a love bug! She walks fairly well on leash but may pull a little if she sees someone that she wants to go meet. Her smaller size (for a Lab) makes her easy to handle and she’d be a great companion for someone looking for a loving and easygoing companion. GGLRR has placed a number of dogs with diabetes that have done well - the key is consistency in treatment, feeding, and monitoring. This sweet senior girl will do great in a home that can maintain a regular routine.

Medical Information: Bish is spayed and microchipped. She’s coming due on shots, so we’ll be getting those updated along with a heartworm test. Her blood sugar levels have stabilized at her current level of insulin treatment.

Bish is located in: Brentwood

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
