My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Daisy is a Miniature Pinscher/Rat Terrier mix, female, 7.5 years of age.

Surrendered to us by an owner who had adopted her from a local shelter approximately a year previous and could no longer keep her. It was obvious to us at first meeting Daisy had some behavior issues that would need to be addressed immediately (much to our dismay, some of these behaviors were actually being encouraged in the dog, i.e., incessant barking [yipping], overprotectiveness/obsessing about owner, nervousness/anxiety - flight/avoidance behavior when meeting new people, etc.). Daisy currently lives in a Monroe SPCA foster home with other dogs and cats. A healthy, happy, very social, and extremely well-mannered dog now, she has recently finished treatment for bilateral ear infections, and she is looking for her forever home.

Beautifully proportioned, gracefully long-legged, and having the elegant hackney gait for which Min Pins are known for as well as the alert, sonar-like ears every Rat Terrier fancier will appreciate, Daisy is a warmth-seeking, comfort-loving dog who if not shadowing her people and/or other pets in the household, then certainly she’ll be found basking in a ray of sun shine, snuggling in a favorite bed, or cuddled-up in a warm comfy blanket.

An extremely well-mannered dog on a leash and in the house now, mostly calm and much better with the yipping (but still a work-in-progress), always amiable and good with other dogs and cats, Daisy is a fine balance between wanting little more than to please her people and having a somewhat independent streak, “what’s in it for me” attitude toward training. A beautifully put together blend of fawningly devoted, dependence and high-spirited, independence; Daisy needs a loving, trustworthy, and responsible pack-leader/owner as well as one who is experienced with the marvelously quirky, inquisitive, and somewhat demanding combined personalities of the Min Pin and the Rat Terrier in one outstanding dog – Daisy!

Outgoing and affectionate with those she knows and trusts – absolutely loyal and always polite, Daisy is friendly and increasingly social when meeting new people (like all dogs though, respect is expected). While she’s got a comfort zone in which she prefers to operate, she is also increasingly confident about experiencing new things particularly if her beloved family members are present. A big personality in a small package, Daisy needs leadership and structure, and she’s not likely to listen if she senses she’s stronger-minded than her owner. A highly sensitive dog, Daisy will NOT respond well to any harsh discipline. An attentive and intelligent canine who learns quickly and is eager to please when she knows what is expected of her, she’s also a warm-hearted, entirely sincere girl who responds well to positive-reinforcement, upbeat training that emphasizes cheerful praise and food rewards for accomplishment. All things an experienced Min Pin and Rat Terrier owner will be familiar with.

Animated, lively, curious, a little quirky, and sometimes playful with spurts of reckless abandon, Daisy lives for companionship, and she won’t do well in a home where she would be left alone for long periods of time. A loyal, and loving dog, Daisy is best suited for a calm, mostly quiet, low-to moderately active home without active, young children. Like many dogs, particularly those of the toy breeds, she can easily be injured and has the potential to become snappy, depressed, and/or timid if not protected from overactive or unruly children or any forms of loud, harsh, or disrespectful treatment.

In a nutshell, clear and consistent expectations, continued socialization, calm leadership, regular mental and physical exercise, and a whole lot of love will help ensure her health and happiness and establish her place as a cherished, extremely well-mannered family companion and pet.

With classic Min Pin light-footed gracefulness and high-stepping gait, and Rat Terrier bravado and pizazz, this darling little girl has the ability to switch from lazing, couch potato to racy, agile athlete in an instant and she is a fantastic jumper. Because of this and her small size, we would prefer Daisy’s new home have a secure fence where she can safely romp, play, explore, and stretch out in a full out run occasionally. It is also important that Daisy’s new owner understand she must always be accompanied by an adult family member when outdoors – she should never be left unattended for any period of time. And when out and about, she must always be secured on a leash for her own safety. Daisy is also crate trained and potty trained; although she gets along very well with the canines and felines she currently lives in a foster home with, a meet-n-greet with any housemate pets will be required prior to adoption.

Daisy currently resides in a home with one of our foster volunteers. You can meet her by appointment with pre-approved adoption application. To start the adoption process and meet Daisy, complete and submit Monroe SPCA’s adoption application: http://www.monroespca.org/Adoption%20Application%20-%20Dog.pdf.

Completed applications can be emailed to info@monroespca.org or dropped off at Monroe SPCA’s Adoption Center and Retail Store located at 293 W. Monroe Street, Dundee, MI.

Once we receive your application, we will review it and call you to conduct a phone screening and schedule a meeting within two (2) to three (3) business days.
