My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This extremely good looker is looking for a forever home that will love him and also give him a real job, and not just waiting around for play time in the yard. Blue is a real working dog who would be a great asset to somebody looking for a dog who wants to compete in agility, obedience, rally, or some other job that will keep him using his mind and focused on his owner in a positive way.

Blue just turned one year old and has already had several homes, none of which offered him the training and type of handler/owner he needs. He was surrendered by his original owner because he was just too much dog for this inexperienced family who punished Blue’s naughty puppy behavior harshly. The initial assessment of Blue, when he arrived at our rescue, was summarized as a body-slamming, stubborn, food-motivated, happy puppy with no boundaries and showing some signs of resource guarding. He showed no trust of his foster mom and any stimulus would cause him to growl. He also reacted very fearfully of anything with a handle such as a mop, broom, or pooper scooper, which makes us wonder how he was being disciplined.

Blue was completely out of control for even our most experienced foster. The only option we found was to send Blue for 4+ weeks of board and train to see if an immersion of basic obedience might help him to settle down, learn impulse control and focus, and even learn if he could develop a relationship with the trainer. The results have proven more than worthwhile and we are happy to say that Blue is considered adoptable, although with distinct requirements: (1) a dedicated job, (2) reward-based training, (3) experienced Doberman owner, (4) commitment to ensuring his new owner follows instructions from the trainer to develop a mutually respectful bond and follows through on his training methods, (5) daily exercise and training.

These requirements may seem limiting in finding the right home, but we do not want to see Blue bounced around if he is placed in the wrong home and is returned, again. DPRPA has been extremely dedicated to ensuring Blue is adoptable and we have devoted considerable resources to his training. On top of these requirements, Blue’s adopters should live near southern NJ or be willing to drive there frequently to work with Blue’s trainer one-on-one for a smooth and knowledgeable hand off.

We know it’s hard to resist Blue because he is so handsome, but do you have what it takes to give him the right home? If so, please complete an application at https://www.dprpa.org/applicationform.
