My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Shamus is only 6 years old, but he's had a past full of difficult times. He started out in Quebec in a puppy mill as a breeder and at 4 years old was rescued and lived in a Quebec shelter for over a year, until he was adopted into a home to call his own.

New Years Day 2019 he fell gravely ill and was rushed into emergency care. His adopters opted to euthanize Shamus with the mounting veterinary bill and still no answer as to what was causing him to be so ill.

His adopters agreed to owner surrender Shamus and with thanks to the Freedom Drivers, he was transported to Toronto January 2nd and admitted back into 24-hour emergency care.

Shamus received extensive medical care and is doing AMAZING!!! We're now looking to move him into his furever home.

He will likely need daily medications for the remainder of his life and blood work every 6 months to ensure he's not relapsing in any way. His medication is not expected to be expensive, maybe $50/month. The blood work he'd need would be around $100 every 6 months. Things certainly to consider before applying for him.

His illness has not been confirmed, but veterinarians suspect it's an auto- immune disorder or could have been a blood parasite. We're not certain, even with the extensive testing. So an answer will not be had. That said, his medications are working beautifully and he's on an amazing road to recovery. If you met him on the street, you wouldn't know he's had any medical issue at all. He also is not contagious in any way.

We also had him groomed recently, so another cost associated with being Shamus's family will be his future grooming needs. He will need to see a groomer on a regular basis.

Shamus is really a perfect dog. Kind and sweet. Very polite and social. He loves everyone and every pet he encounters. He's just a super dog that someone will be very lucky to call their own.

He will remain in a foster to adopt situation with his adopters until he is medically cleared from his current medical needs and a future treatment plan is confirmed by his veterinarians. His current medical regime and medication protocols will continue on for 4 more weeks, until the 1st week of February.
