My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Barkley, a cute, cuddly & affectionate pup who loves his people and sticks to them like glue! He snuggles on the couch and at night time shares the bed with them! He thrives on their attention and is simply their best friend!

Barkley was rescued from a high kill shelter in California. He has lived with his people, as their loving and loyal companion, for 4 years. He is wonderfully gentle and tolerant with their small child too and the four of them have lived happily together. But, his people have learned during the last 4 years, that Barkley prefers a calm and predictable environment. He doesn’t do well with surprises or situations that startle him. Because their child is getting older and friends are coming to play and because a new baby is coming too, they feel that their home is no longer suitable for him. They know that he would be happier in a quieter and more peaceful home with a regular routine that he can count on. Barkley is their first baby and they love him but they have to do what is best for him and for their family. They would like to see Barkley in a quiet home with adults, where he doesn’t have to be concerned about people coming and going all the time or with busy and noisy little people everywhere!

His family will miss him being such an important part of their lives. He is athletic and has been eager to join them on hikes and runs and outings in the car. He is a smart guy, listens well and learns quickly. He responds to a finger snap to jump into the car or onto the bed. He is a enthusiastic companion who walks well on the leash and doesn’t lose it when other dogs wander by! He knows basic commands like sit, stay, come, down and has nearly mastered recall - except if a squirrel runs by! He would probably chase cats too! He enjoys dog parks but he likes to act “alpha” and sometimes plays too hard. He won’t back down if another dog gets too aggressive. His people realize that sometimes rough play can turn into something more serious. So, to always be on the safe side, they limit his involvement in multi-dog environments.

Barkley is great at home and there is no need for him to be in a crate. In fact, he hates crates - he really can’t tolerate them! He will stay alone without causing any trouble. And if there happens to be any bits of food laying around the floor he will happily clean it up! He’s not a fussy eater - he’ll eat anything - for better or for worse!

He is a cheerful, easy going pup who is a loyal and loving friend to his people. His greatest joy comes from spending time with his family and being included in their activities- which includes eating of course! He is best suited to a home, with a fenced yard , with active adults who have no children and who have no plans for children in the future. He has always been the “only” so he needs a home with no other dogs or cats or small creatures!

Barkley will do almost anything his favourite people ask of him just to hear their praise. He craves their attention and approval and their love. He will be a friend for life through thick or thin. And his wonderful personality will keep them smiling and laughing.

Barkley is very heathy, vaccinated and neutered. If you love this breed, he could be the one for you.
