My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Before we introduce this cutest bundle of puppy love, PLEASE NOTE: he will only be adopted into a home in San Diego or Orange County CA and one in which someone is home most of the day. Preference will be given to applicants who have a securely fenced yard. Papillons and Playmates (PAPS) is primarily a Papillon rescue but we also take in “playmates” that need a forever home and here we have a doozy.
This is Slugger. He will be 5 months old Feb. 12. He is a Maltese/Yorkshire Terrier mix. To our minds, it’s irresponsible breeders who have created what are called “designer dogs” by mating a specific toy breed with another. In this case they call them Morkies and charge a fortune for what is basically a mutt. Having said that, Slugger is about the cutest mutt ever. He is a fluffball who is much more like a Maltese than a Yorkie. Slugger is a very lively puppy. He is not for the faint of heart, as he can be very destructive and will bite you with his teething shark-like puppy teeth, which may go on until his seventh month. That is how healthy puppies are. But he isn’t just puppy-active. He is also a sweet pup who, when he has worked out all his energy, will cuddle with you, kiss you and dote on you.

Slugger loves playing with toys and knows how to bring them back when you throw them. He needs the activity of fetching and should have at least 2 play sessions a day with his humans, as well as walks. He can sometimes amuse himself by chewing on Nylabones or other safe puppy chews but consider that a brief reprieve. Luckily, since he is a young puppy, he needs regular rest times and that gives you a break.

Slugger knows a few commands. He will sit, sometimes stay, and give you a toy when you say “bring it to me”. He loves to fetch over and over. We have been working diligently on potty training and he is doing very well, though is not totally reliable yet. The more often you take him out, the fewer accidents he will have.

Slugger loves other dogs. Unfortunately the dogs in his foster home are all older and want nothing to do with his strenuous play. The only animal he doesn’t try to force to play is a cat and they are very good friends.

Our rescue requires an extensive questionnaire, a vet reference if you have or have had pets, and a home visit. Slugger is not ready to go to his forever home yet, as he will be neutered Feb. 4 and then will require 7-10 days to recuperate in his foster home.

We are starting to accept applications for Slugger now. His adoption fee is $500. He will come to your home having had all his puppy shots plus rabies, been examined by a vet, been neutered and, in addition, he will come with many toys, some beds, LOTS of his puppy food and a “sleeping quarters” that is not a crate but more an expensive playpen. He sleeps happily there and until he is totally housetrained we recommend he continue to sleep there.

Slugger is a super puppy. He is smart, loving and very playful. If you are interested in adopting Slugger and meet his requirements, please email us at paprescuesocal@gmail.com to request an adoption application.
