My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Beau
Beau is a cross post for Jefferson County Animal Control. If you are interested in adopting Beau please send an email to jeffersoncountyanimalcontrol@gmail.com or call (304) 728-3289.

Meet Beau. He was picked up by Jefferson County Animal Control (WV) as a stray and never claimed. He's been at the shelter since mid-July. That's 6 months without any interest from rescues or potential adopters.

Beau is a Shepherd/English Mastiff mix who is estimated to be around 3 years old. He weighs about 80 lbs.

Beau's chestnut colored coat is soft and plush. He has a beautiful dark muzzle and lovely dark markings around his large gentle eyes.

Beau has tested positive for Lyme disease and is currently on antibiotic treatments for that.

He is an amazingly sweet and gentle boy who loves people. However, we don't know anything about his experience with children. Despite the potential achiness from the Lyme disease, Beau doesn't mind being gently touched. In fact, he seems to relish the human contact. He hasn't displayed sensitivity to having any particular part of his body touched. He loves going for walks. He loads up easily and seems to enjoy car rides.

Cats are a definite NO for Beau.

We are guessing that he spent much of his early life chained up outside. Consequently, he seems to be inexperienced around other dogs and may not know how to accurately read canine body language. Because of his inexperience with other dogs and his intense dislike for cats, small breed dogs may not be a good match for him.

Beau will need a patient guardian and coach who will take the time necessary for him to learn how to adapt to the sometimes confusing world of humans and other dogs. We have been working on clicker training, and he is responding very well to positive reinforcement, force free training.
