My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sugar Pop aka Poppy is a purebred female Yorkshire Terrier. She is 8-10 years old and is kinda skinny at 7 pounds. Her ideal weight is 8-9 pounds.

Poppy is a survivor. She’s one lucky dog. And our goal here at RCCR is to guarantee that her luck holds forever, right into the perfect adoptive home.

This sweetheart has clearly had a rough life. Her story is a hard one to tell because it speaks to so much sadness and hardship.

Poppy’s journey to a better life began in early 2018, when a rural backyard breeder “retired” three small adult female Yorkies. Their forced retirement was not the act of a kindly owner. It simply relieved the breeder of keeping “inventory” that had ceased to earn its keep.

Somehow, the girls moved to an unlicensed foster home. Their new living conditions were no better than the breeder’s miserable kennels. Veterinary care to address their medical needs was not part of their foster plan.

When the foster care provider decided to re-home the three dogs, a Good Samaritan stepped forward to help them. “Good Sam” found each dog respite in private homes with friends.

Dog #1 lives with a retired couple who named her “Ethel.” She has a Maltese companion named “Lucy.”

Dog #2’s new owner named her Yorkie, “Pearl.” When Miss Pearl saw a vet—for the very first time in her long life, she was one sick puppy. She was scheduled for a spay and dental. However, the vet determined that her medical issues were so extreme that humane euthanasia was the kindest option to relieve her pain and suffering.

Like the other two dogs, #3 was emaciated and wormy, with severe dental disease and a low overall health score. This dog’s owner called her “Poppy,” after a princess character in the 2016 animated musical comedy, Trolls. She responds to her name.

When she kept escaping from her new owner, Poppy went to the same veterinarian and, later, to a rural rescue group. The rescue group fostered Poppy and then transferred her to RCCR in January.

Poppy is friendly and sweet. She can be shy at first, but warms up and enjoys being held. She’s a good companion. Her classic black & tan coat is soft, not coarse or wiry. She retains five teeth, one premolar and all four canines (“fang” teeth). She has a good appetite and eats small bites kibble lightly moistened with canned stew.

Her house training skills are improving. She often uses pee pads indoors and goes outside to a fenced yard on a regular basis. She enjoys tiny training treats for good behavior.

Poppy is active but not hyper. She’s curious about everything, and wants to explore and sniff around the house and yard. She has lived with dogs her size and much larger, as well as cats, and children older than ten years.

We hope that a committed adopter will help show Poppy love by showering her with snuggles, yummy soft food and a comfy dog bed that she deserves.

Poppy is ready for the next part of her journey as a cherished companion. She is completely vetted: spayed, dental cleaning w/extractions, updated shots (rabies, dhpp, Bordetella), heartworm disease tested (negative), and microchipped. Her adoption fee is $275.
