My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This is Sophie and here’s her story: Jen happened to see a Craigslist ad for Sophie. Her then owner was looking to rehome her, and Jen said there was just something about Sophie and something about that ad that gave her a gut feeling that she had to help this little dog. She met the owner in a parking lot and took Sophie. Sophie was blind with what Jen was told were cataracts, Sophie was not spayed, and her vaccination status was uncertain. So Jen got her spayed and vaccinated for rabies and took her home intending to give her a home with her other dog. But Sophie is a bit of a diva and was not fond of another dog in the house, especially at feeding time. And Jen has some health issues that have made it difficult for her to give a special needs dogs like Sophie the care she needs. So although she had quickly fallen in love with Sophie, Jen made the difficult decision to find a better situation for Sophie and reached out to HLD. And we are so happy and honored to help this kind lady and Sophie.

We immediately took Sophie to our vet for an exam. We got all her vaccinations caught up and checked her for heartworm. She’s negative. We think Sophie may have some sight. She seems get around better in the light and may be able to make out large shapes. (Jen says she likes to bark at the neighbor’s cows.) But we learned that Sophie does not have cataracts. Her ghost eyes are caused by corneal edema. And we learned that the intraocular pressure in both of her eyes is abnormally high. So we suspect that Sophie has glaucoma. So we put Sophie on a couple of medications to reduce the edema and the pressure in her eyes. We’re hopeful that these meds will help Sophie regain much of her sight. If Sophie does have glaucoma, she’ll need to stay on these medications for the rest of her life. In a couple of weeks, Sophie will be going back to Wedington Animal hospital to get her teeth cleaned and her eyes rechecked, and we’ll have a better understanding of her eye condition.

Jen tells us Sophie is a loving little dog. She loves to cuddle up on the couch with her human, and she loves children. Her cantankerous ways with other dogs have improved a little bit, too, since she came to live with Jen. Sophie is 6 to 7 years old and weighs about 8 pounds. She’s housetrained and microchipped.
