Charlie is a cute, fluffy and soft, big eyed 15 lb. Skye Terrier/terrier mix who is about age one and is upbeat, happy, and playful. He has a sweet and loving personality and his favorite thing to do is to play with toys and other dogs. He loves people, is affectionate and sweet, and occasionally gives soft kisses. He likes kids. He is an inquisitive little guy who loves to follow me around and intently observe what I am doing.

Charlie is an inherently good dog, non-destructive, mostly well behaved, well-balanced, but with normal puppy antics. He has occasionally misbehaved when he does not want to go into the crate. Generally though, he has done amazingly well in the crate and has been quiet and has slept quietly throughout the night, enjoying his rawhides as a bedtime snack. He has been potty-trained, with no accidents, providing he gets potty breaks (however, potty reinforcement is needed in any new environment). He has not yet learned to use the doggie door, but we will continue to work on that. Charlie is smart and food motivated (with treats) so he is well able to learn new things! He can be a bit “mouthy” as most terriers can be. By “mouthy” it means he uses his mouth (like puppy play biting) to say hi or when he wants your attention. I am working with him to help him understand that puppy play biting is no longer acceptable.

Charlie walks well on the leash and rides fine in the car. He loves to play with other dogs, however, he has been very annoying to other dogs who simply want to be left alone and who do not have any interest in playing. Given that the other dog is playful, and up for a laugh, things should be just fine, and Charlie is one of those dogs that can get any dog to play with him! Charlie tends to “moan” and grunt (sometimes bark) to incite the other dog to play with him (this can be seen in the video). I would consider Charlie to be a vocally expressive dog, though absolutely not a barker per se (but like most dogs, he will alert bark). He is still an impressionable puppy, who will model the behavior of the other dogs in the home, both good and bad. A plus about Charlie is that he loves an array of toys and is well able to play with toys on his own. He does have a few grooming needs; he should be occasionally brushed so that he does not get matted, and also, see a professional groomer maybe 4 times a year to keep his coat trim, and in particular trim around his face so that you can see his cute eyes and so that he can see as well! I would say that Charlie is a LOW shedding dog.

Charlie was relinquished to rescue by his owners who had adopted him from the Inland Valley Humane society (as a stray). They loved Charlie very much and were extremely sad to give him to rescue, but the other dog in the home never really accepted Charlie being there, and was constantly stressed out about it. The other dog was slightly older and did not appreciate Charlie coming in and playing with her toys and lying on her pet beds, in addition to his puppy antics. So they made the hard decision to give him up, so that I could find him a more appropriate home and/or dog/dog match.

The best fit for Charlie is a home with another dog, either boy or girl, who actually likes to play and have a good time. Charlie really enjoys his play time and it is very important to him (though he can also settle down and chill nicely too, throughout the day). It is possible that I will consider him to be an only dog in the home given the people frequent dog park on a REGULAR basis or attend doggie daycare, and have other dog social and fun activities that they participate in with their dog, however, my preference is that Charlie be matched to an already existing dog in the home. A small yard at the very least would be a huge plus. Cats are an unknown, though I tend to think that Charlie may be bothersome and annoying to a cat. Charlie is young and should be crated when folks are not around to supervise him, until a transition period is over, and Charlie’s movements and behaviors in a new place have been fully observed. Therefore, an adopter must be willing to acquire an appropriately-sized wire crate for his new home transition. I am particularly looking for a home where people will incorporate obedience training. Charlie is an intelligent dog that will relish in the learning and positive reinforcement (he should learn “come” “sit” “leave it” “stay,” etc.). Also, people who have the means and desire to keep him nicely groomed.

NOTE: We only adopt dogs as primarily INDOOR dogs. Dogs can go outside to play, potty, to sun themselves at will, but should never be excluded to an outside area. You do not need to give a dog the run of the entire house, and an appropriate sized wire crate works very well during a transitional phase.
