My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

From his former owners~~It is with heavy hearts we have come to the decision our 4-year old German Shepherd needs a new home. We have had him since he was 8 weeks old. Our circumstances were completely different when we first got him than they are now.

The first few years we had our little Skyler we took him to work with us every day. Now we have a different job and he has been left at home most of the day. Last week alone we worked almost 80 hours each which left Skyler with virtually no love and attention. He has become depressed and mopey. Even when we are home now we are too tired to take him anywhere or go for walks. He basically just lies around now with no exercise.

Skyler is a sweet boy who is very devoted to the people he loves. He is also very unsure of strange people or dogs. He had a few bad experiences when he was young that left a lasting impression on him. He is not aggressive or mean…just not trusting. He has never bitten anyone. He has been around children and other dogs. After he gets to know other dogs he is very playful with them. He grew up with a Chighagha (little Charlie). Little Charlie is my daughter’s dog so when she moved out Charlie went with her. He has also played with other little dogs and is very respectful of their size/personality. He is unsure of big dogs and sees them as a threat.

Skyler is a tall skinny boy with tons of energy. He loves to run. Playing fetch and chasing balls is his favorite game. When he was young we also taught him a couple service dog tasks. I used to take a few medications at night but I would often forget. Skyler learned quickly to find my pill bag at approximately 9 pm every night. We would hide the bag everywhere in the house and teach him to find it and bring it to me. Eventually he automatically disappeared every evening for a few minutes and would come back carrying the bag I kept my pills in. He would put them on my lap and sit down and stare at me until I took them. He took his job very seriously. I no longer take those pills so Skyler lost his task. ☹

I would also use him for stability or support when my leg would start hurting. He learned to walk slowly up stairs or unstable ground. He would do well walking next to a wheelchair or providing stability to someone who needed it. He would thrive on being assigned tasks and taking care of someone. He has a backpack he loves to wear that I would only put on him when I needed him to help me (or work).

He would also thrive with an active family who likes to go on walks, hikes, and car rides. He does not run away when loose and always comes when called by name. He stays in the front yard with no fence when we are outside doing yard work or something else. Our first house where he spent most of his life did not have a fenced yard and he never left the yard unless we were with him. He respects boundaries and thrives on pleasing us.

We want Skyler to be happy and find a home where he is loved and has an active life….whether it’s in the service of someone who needs him or an active person/family who will give him the time he needs.
